I saw this movie a couple of times as a kid (I'm not in the US and it was a staple here in the 80s/early 90s) and there's really not much you'd have to change if you got rid of the white family and had Uncle Remus telling his stories to his own grandkids.

I like this idea. And some backstory on those folktales would be good, too....

The little white kid parts were boring and forgetable anyway. Cutting them out would be an improvement even without the benefit of making the movie less racist.

I'm in favor of any plan that involves Jordan Peele creating in exchange for large sums of money.

I live in the South and I specifically remember reading many of the Uncle Remus stories when I was in first grade, and that my class sang Zip-a-dee-doo-dah at some school event or another. Should probably note I'm white and the school was all white kids and uuuum I have no doubt there was some level of racism at play at that school there but yeah. Anyway I had often seen images from Song of the South and ngl, as a kid I was rather disappointed that I could never see the movie that had the song and the stories that I learned in school.

Anyway yeah I agree that just locking it away forever is probably not a good move. History is important, even (and perhaps especially) when it makes us uncomfortable. There are plenty of ways to make movies like this into opportunities to learn. Or, as you suggest, opportunities to remake and do better.

I agree. And "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah" is a great song!

It would be nice to have a "Tales of Br'er Rabbit" movie that isn't Coonskin (entertaining though that film is, it is NOT at all kid-friendly and probably would make many adults wince too).

I think it could be done and I'd like to see an exploration of these folk tales.

I say let it remain in circulation, don't vault it, and use it as a teaching lesson.

Thank you! I really love the Br'er Rabbit stories, and a movie that explores that folklore without context-free racist shit would be great.
