DA from downthread: I’ve never heard that either and I was huge into DW and the fandom at the time.
I don’t remember him being even a little surprised at the audience reaction because it was clearly an upsetting scene. The music, the aftershow, everything about it made it clear this was A Big Tragedy. And I could be confusing this with a different special but I’m pretty sure BBC put on a warning card before the title screen.
