The way I do it involves winding 14 gauge wire around a dowel hundreds of times, snipping the resulting spiral off into individual rings, and weaving them together with two pairs of pliers. It's kind of like knitting, in that it's a series of mostly repetitive motions you can do while sitting in front of the TV or listening to music. Just... a lot heavier. ;)
