Being a history major, I adored stories about the Tudors. I once read a historical fiction story in which they were friends and worked together to "build a better country" during Mary's reign.

Then I actually read some history books and discovered how much of a lie that was.

I kinda wished it were true, though.

Tough to read but I tried anyway because it's an Elizabeth/Mary Tudor secret. Bah, revisionist fiction's done way worse than that (seriously? just saw a book about Elizabeth being a joint ruler with a queen of a faerie world and Shakespeare and Marlowe were her guardians. it was trippy.) Mmm, you have a good point there. The relationship between Mary and Elizabeth was pretty ruthless and it would have been nice if they just could have been sisters at some point instead of rivals for the crown.

Sadly, you're right in that you can't re-write history.

I find them fascinating too. I always thought it was a shame they couldn't be friends, but given their history, Catherine vs. Anne, and the whole religious issue, it wasn't going to happen.

Replace the Mary Tudor with Mary Stuart and I'd actually agree with your secret.

Honestly, in terms of relationship, they didn't hate each other THAT much. More than anything Mary hated where Elizabeth came from (Anne Boleyn)than her actual person. And if what I've read was any indication, they were quite cordial on most occasions (especially when they were younger)

and even then I still don't think Mary hated her. I think (I'm pretty damned sure) her Catholic councilors planted all sorts of shit into her head because of their differing religions.

Point is, I'd put 20 bucks on the fact that the only real animocity between them was because Mary was a DEVOUT Catholic and Elizabeth was not. Which I guess when you think about it, differing religions was more than enough reasons to be mortal enemies with someone else.

Rambling again. I NEVER have the chance to talk about Elizabeth with others in the know.
