The second outrage is this: in Russia (especially turn-of-the-century Russia), no one uses your full first name by itself. If you don't know someone well or are being polite, you use their full name with the patronymic (in this case, Alexei Lukianovich). If you know someone well (and in this case, are the person's older sister), you would always use a nickname (of varying degrees of affection); in this case, Alyosha is the basic nickname for Alexei. A sister would not just call her brother simply Alexei -- you can see this even in "the Brothers Karamazov," where Alexei Fyodorovich Karamazov is always called at least Alyosha, if not something more affectionate (like Alyoshenka).

Anyway, that's what I've learned. Now watch an actual Russian person come by and point out all my mistakes. :)

I just want to say that while I can't relate to the secret, I do love how it's written. It's funny, despite being so wordy. Also, Carnevale! That is never not awesome.

Wellll I think that in the first draft of the script the Avatar of Light wasn't even meant to be Russian - so I guess that the non-Russian name stuck in later versions. This and the fact that sometimes you need to drop that anvil - and the Lucius/Light association would have been perhaps more obvious to a Western audience? Idk, I'm just guessing. Anyway YAY CARNIVALE, that show was (sigh) fuckin' ace.

Wow, I didn't know that -- that makes sense. That first draft wouldn't happen to be available (or summarized in detail) anywhere, would it? Ahhh, probably not, right?

Man, it sucks to get into a fandom long after the ~~ball~~show is over and everyone has moved on to other things. :(

Actually, OP, I have good news for you! The Yahoo group (http://tv.groups.yahoo.com/group/CarnivaleHBO/) has an archive with lots of preliminary material, backstory for the characters, etc. because Dan Knauf actually participated in the mailing list (which has been pretty dead lately but it has bursts of hyperactivity). He still pops up every now and then to clarify some doubts. But some of the users are probably almost as knowledgeable as he is, lol! That's why I'm not surprised you actually got into Russian because of Carnivale, it's obviously a show that inspires dedication :)

man, I can barely remember a damn thing from my Russian language course, but lord do I love writing in cursive Cyrillic :)

Quite so, yes :)
I work at a library, so whenever anything by a Russian author comes through, I always picture their name in Cyrillic, and then imagine writing it in cursive (and I actually do if I have pen and paper handy). I've always felt like such a nerd for doing that.

Plus, it just looks pretty.

3. Alyosha just makes me think of The Brothers Karamazov which deals with patricide.. which is a common theme (of sorts) of Carnivale.
