Let me get this straight. You think Robert Gould Shaw, a man who has been dead for over 170 years, is your friend and haunting your iPod? I can understand admiring the man, but he is NOT your friend. You've never met him. You've never spoken with him. He was dead before your great-great-grandparents were born. That does not a friendship make. That's even worse that all of those crazy girls who thinks they are BFFs with the latest celebrity because they're following the person on twitter or something.

I don't know whether to laugh and point at you or just shake my head in disbelief. Maybe I'll do both.

[identity profile] rabbitucker.livejournal.com 2009-06-04 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
It is a bit twisted, isn't it?

I'm glad someone else was the "bad guy" and I didn't have to say it.

OP

(Anonymous) 2009-06-05 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Twistedly awesome.

Letting people do your dirty work. Tsk tsk.

What can I say? Sometimes I am lazy!

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2009-06-05 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Haha! Well, at least you can admit it and be honest. Better than being a coward.

OP LOL

(Anonymous) 2009-06-04 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Death ends a life, not a relationship. =) What about everyone who thinks Jesus is their savior? Are they crazy? Why can they have a savior and me not a friend? =D A friend sounds much more likely...

besides, at least Shaw would have the balls to not heckle someone as anon. :D He got those confeds good!

OP STILL LOL

(Anonymous) 2009-06-05 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
By the way, he's 171 and he'll be 172 in October. If you're going to bitch someone out have your facts right.

Btw, I laughed too.

(Anonymous) 2009-06-04 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
The voice that sings We Are One is Cam Clarke, ie Liquid Snake. That is all.

[identity profile] rabbitucker.livejournal.com 2009-06-04 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
He was also Leonardo of the original Ninja Turtles cartoon, and the old dub voice of Kaneda.

OP LOL

(Anonymous) 2009-06-05 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
SHAW WAS A NINJA TURTLE? FUCKING SWEET.

[identity profile] singeaddams.livejournal.com 2009-06-04 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
It's great to have friends.

OP

(Anonymous) 2009-06-05 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, yes it is. =)

(Anonymous) 2009-06-04 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Jesus. Are you married on the astral plane too?

OP LOL

(Anonymous) 2009-06-04 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, to Sephiroth! <3 I'm expecting our first spirit baby!

Name it Renesmee.

[identity profile] jaquenerd.livejournal.com 2009-06-05 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, this secret is really bizarre, but also funny. I almost skipped it but recognized the picture of Shaw lol.

Anyway, that's cool OP, the movie was what first introduced me to Shaw and his story along with the men he commanded. I was really emotionally impacted by their stand at the Fort and ended up looking up all I could about him. (His letters to his wife are totally sweet.) I approve of your fangirling him. (It's also really sad to see the progressive strides he and his men were making not change anything right away. D:)

But yeah, I would probably keep this a secret though. Just because the rest of the world probably wouldn't understand lol.

OP =)

(Anonymous) 2009-06-05 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Haha! Try being me. Trust me, I was WTFing for a while but there's so much evidence it's spooky. If you're curious I'm not opposed to sharing it, lol. Besides, even if he's not at least I'm finding it fun and amusing? It's fun to believe. As Fox Mulder would say I want to believe.

Haha thanks! Yea, I first was introduced by the movie in the 8th grade in History class. When he died I just sat in my seat, in shock and disbelief. After that I looked up all I could about him and bought a book of his letters. He's too funny sometimes. Did you ever read the one where he teases his mother about leaking some of his letters to the press? He's hilarious. I only got to read a couple to his wife-- for some reason my book, which has nearly all of the letters, doesn't have all of them. O_o May I ask where you read the letters to his wife? I read all of mine in the book The Blue Eyed Child Of Fortune. Also, yeah-- it was so sad that it took so damn long. I'm just glad he's resting peacefully with his men now... or hopefully he is. Bodies from Fort Wagner were washing up on the shores in South Carolina until about the 1960's. =( And we all know what it was like then. I highly doubt the bodies were given the respect they deserved.

Haha yeah, lookit all the wank above. Oh well!

Re: OP =)

[identity profile] jaquenerd.livejournal.com 2009-06-05 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
lol why not? Hey, what ever makes you happy, ya know? If religions aren't treated like crazy-people organizations then I don't see how your beliefs are any different. I mean, I wish the ghost of a dead Civil War colonel was haunting my iPod. Instead mine just refuses to charge. :(

I know, I saw that movie in grade school too and idk if it was the hotties portraying everyone or what but I have retained an interest in the American Civil War ever since. The letters I read to his wife were given to me by a teacher as a handout. I forgot the website she got them from but if google turns up anything I'll let you know. Sorry. D:

Yeah, I also read that all the soldiers and him in the 54th Mass Infantry were buried in a mass grave or something by the Confederates and treated disrespectfully in general. I, for one, am glad that at least they are respected now. I mean, I respect all volunteer soldiers who sign up to serve their country but it was ridiculous and disgusting how the men of the 54th were treated just because they were black. I'm glad that Shaw, at least, was able to train them to become the respectable and efficient infantry they became.

lol, I'm just rambling so I'll stop now.

Yeah, I know. Honestly, for F!S, this really isn't all that deserving of the wank it's getting. Sorry OP.

Re: OP =)

(Anonymous) 2009-06-05 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Haha! That's exactly what I said! Maybe if it starts charging soon you can thank Shaw? There'd be some good evidence! LOL

I wish my teacher would have handed some out! I didn't even know he was married until I did my research. Why wasn't she in the movie? Oh, and I hear you. I was always interested in History but I just ran with it after that. I greatly appreciate that you'd link me if you knew! =D

Yes. Everything you said = 100% yes. I heard they stripped him and beat his body. I also heard it's custom to return soldiers with certain ranks back to their famalies (it applied to both sides). Eventually someone stepped up and offered to dig him up and return him to his family but his father said "No, he's right where he wants to be" or something along those lines.

Nono! History rambles FTW! It's great to talk to someone who shares the same passion I do. =)

Yeah. O_o I just kinda laughed and made witty (well I think they are) replies. Thanks for the sympathy. <3 I thought F!S was about like... not being judged and stuff and getting supportive comments. I see more mean comments than I do anything else.

Re: OP =)

[identity profile] jaquenerd.livejournal.com 2009-06-05 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, if Shaw saves me from buying a new iPod, I'll start a church for him myself. lol

I know, they really don't teach much about him or anyone really in American schools (at least the ones I've been to.) I think she might have been cut from the movie because...maybe it would be distracting/too sad for the audience? lol, I wish she had been added, but maybe she was cut for time?

D: It's just so sad. Not just for Shaw but for the families of everyone else who fought in the 54th. To not even have the reassurance that they got a proper burial...

lol, I kind of am interested in the African-American involvement in America's wars and nation building in general. Have you read Octavian Nothing? It's a YA book and a little dry at times, but does offer an interesting insight from an ex-slave's perspective on the Revolutionary War and the Rebel Americans in general. (I kind of found myself rooting for the British for the first time lol.) Sadly, I haven't found as many written for the Civil War but my library is pitifully small. They do have plenty of other Civil War bios/fictionalizations however.

Ahh, history rambles. I'm debating whether or not to read Hetalia for that very reason.

Lol, I laughed if it helps. To be honest, I kind of view F!S as a sort of fandom recovery/therapy group. Where all the burned out/secretive/crazy/etc. people go to just cut loose and vent/let it out. The comments usually range from helpful to hurtful, but at least you've tested the waters to see how people would react to your opinion.

Lol, but I'm sure I'm the only one who uses it that way.

Re: OP =)

HAHA. I'd help.

I know. :( He had like... one line in my highschool history book. Zero in my college one. I suppose maybe they thought she wasn't relevant? But she was! =(

I know! It's sososo sad. What I found to be even sadder was that his wife never married again and they were only married for about three months. =( How many other famalies were torn apart? How many heroes who deserved recognition didn't get it? I was happy that I could pay my respects not only to Shaw but to his men as well.

No, I haven't! I'll have to look it up! Thanks!

ME TOO. I get very very tempted to dive into that fandom but then I go "Uhhh... nooo...".

Yeah same here! lol Almost all my secrets have been ripped into here. I used to get really offended but now I just laugh.

No! That's EXACTLY how I use it!

OKay, I got curious and checked out your user info. No way. You like Avatar (AND KATAANG AND RACEBENING <3) and Harry Potter and Shaw. You are awesome. I'm apart of (or er, a friend of?) [profile] aang_aint_white and [livejournal.com profile] racebending. If you tried I bet you could figure out who I am. lol I have a note about how Colonel Shaw is my hero in my user info. I am far too shy atm to de-anon or ask to be your friend. lol

:: blushes ::

I do need to update my interests as they have expanded, but lol, you sound awesome too.

Okay, I'll keep an eye out for any of the posting members who list anything about Colonel Shaw, (I might just end up friending the totally wrong person on the community member lists but whatever) so hopefully, I'll friend the right one. (If that is ok with you?)

Oh, dude, it's cool if you want to friend me first. Lol, I don't mind and it sounds like you and I have passions/interests in the same things so, hell yeah I'd like to get to know you! (Although I must warn you, I'm a pretty boring person in RL. F!S is one of the few comms I check/post when I can. Sorry if I'm not as cool as I apparently appear.)

I won't comment on the ghost/haunting thing, as I don't particularly believe in the supernatural.

However, I will say that it's great you look up to and admire the man, what he did, and what he stood for. He and all of his men were heroes, fighting not only to preserve the Union and crush a violent, unnecessary rebellion, but to help bring freedom to the enslaved. And I think that he would be glad to see that he and all of those under his command have inspired people, even up to today.
