Speaking for myself, I am a HUGE Trek fan and have been for years, but I feel more active now because the Trek fandom has been given a jolt. I pretty much missed the Trek glory days because of my young age, and the only active Trek-fandom when I was 'of age' was "Enterprise", which was an epic failure. Sure, the Trek fandom was active in some areas (I spent my time on Trek BBS to get my Trekkie fix), but not really LJ - so my recent participation has more to do with the revived fandom - and the fact that the new movie is prodding people to watch TOS, TNG, DS9 and even VOY to some extent.

But, yeah, I think it's hilarious when I see new!fans who are trying to pass themselves off as people who have watched Star Trek for years. I see this a lot.

Generally, I'm seeing these people I've noticed on LJ before who have shown no previous interest in Trek *at all* who are, all of a sudden, gurus on everything Trek (probably thanks to Memory Alpha) and then go on to say "I've been a fan since I was a kid blah blah blah." Sure, I could buy this, but then they have no knowledge of TNG (which would probably be the Trek of childhood for most LJers - that or DS9).

I think some newer fans might feel they need to pretend to be an old!fan to feel more accepted by the massive Trek fandom. I think that's what the secret is poking fun at.

It does make a lot of the secrets of the last few days make sense-- when I say "star trek fan", people have almost always been taking it to be in the context of just TOS, recently, and.. yeah. My first trek was TNG-- I was so young when I watched it that I liked Westley. ;)

Eh. It's kind of terrible, but until people like more than just the movie, I don't consider them real Trekfen at all. So, for me, they're right. GOOD THING I'M NOT ANYMORE INTO THE NU!FANDOM THAN I WAS THE OLD? 8D;

Well, everyone wants to fit in. I'm sure it must be intimidating for new!fans to see a lot of older fans who know a lot more about Trek. I think the pretend-old!fan act is just in order to fit in. It's kind of annoying, but I understand where they're coming from.

TNG was my first Trek too. ♥ I watched it when I was a kid, but my love for it really started to bloom when my brother and I got a model NCC-1701-D for Christmas and watched Generations.

I hate to say it, but I agree. Sure, you can be a new!Trek fan or a Star Trek XI fan, but not a "Trekkie" or "Trekker" or even "Star Trek" fan if you've *only* seen the new movie. Being a Trek fan kind of means that you have seen various forms of Trek, not just one, or at least have tried the older series/movies.

I am seeing a lot of new!fans watching the older series/movies, so I am pretty happy with how things are turning out.

I just don't see the shame in admitting you're new to something, but are interested in learning. :( Like. Is no one allowed to grow, and accept that until they know more, they should probably listen to the older fans on some things?

♥ I watched it as a child, and the reruns whenever they were on television, but it was only getting the boxsets in the last few years for Christmas that has made me into a huge fan. I did keep the blueprints my uncle gave me for the -D as well, though. (Also, my phone is called NCC-1709-SMEXY. I am a lame-o.)

Exactly. You can be a fan of the movie, but until you expand your knowledge beyond that, you aren't going to be able to claim you're a fan of the franchise.

:) At least they are watching it. For me, I mostly just hope that the love of the new movie jumpstarts the TNG fandom. 8D;

I'm kind of glad not to have run into any of that because I would likely feel the same as you do. Especially with something like this where people are likely to have gotten a lot of crap for being Trek fans before the new movie.

Word. And some of the comments I'm seeing are making me feel uneasy. I watched all the Treks with my dad when I was little be they repeats of TOS or new episodes of a new saga. I've not participated in fandom but the interest generated by the film kinda makes me want to...now I'm not so sure if every little thing I say is going to be judged against someone else's standards :\.

Meh, we had this with Doctor Who as well. Apparently a new thing making you interested again in something you've always loved isn't allowed.

I don't think that's what the OP is saying. Essentially, he/she is tired with people pretending to have been a part of something that they weren't/had no interest in. There's nothing wrong with being a new fan. Personally, I love new fans, but at the same time, when you breeze into a new fandom and try to pass yourself off as someone who has always been there, it does sting a few people - esp. those who *have* been in the fandom for a long, long time.

Actually, more directly, I think the secret is directed at those who should admit to having *never* been interested in Star Trek before, but are now pretending to have loved it all along. I can relate. Before the new movie, there was a lot of ~hate~ directed at others and myself for being Trek fans. Always receiving comments like "Oh, Star Trek? That's so lame" and now it being received as something cool and nerd-tastic. IDK, it is a little off-putting for people who have been here for a while.

But I'm not a new fan. I may not have blogged about Star Trek all the time but I got the hate directed at me, same as everyone else, for liking stuff like ST. But this secret just says to me that the OP would lump me in with everyone else and say I'm pretending just because I may not have spoken about ST much (because of the aforementioned hate!)

Here's an idea, OP, why don't you make a nice little "I'm a New Trek fan!" icon and distribute it so all the people who don't meet your standard of Star Trek fannery can give the proper disclaimer along with their posts, that way everybody knows exactly who's who.

Hmm... I think it's the LCARS font for the "Incoming Signal" bit. The proper name for it is Swiss 911 Ultra Compressed. http://new.myfonts.com/fonts/bitstream/swiss-911/ultra-compressed/ (but you can find it other places by searching "LCARS font star trek" or something along those lines :D)
