I'm not even near that fandom...I mean I read some not all of the books, just like a normal part of the population...and I COMPLETELY agree with this. I was like "uh what is the point of dying in this case?"
there are a lot of things in Harry Potter where serious life situations or quandaries (like life ending) are cheapened by magic, because it makes a lot of stuff illogical. imo...only imo...as I said I haven't even read all of it!
(if the OP doesn't agree, not trying to convince you or anything. I realize you might just be concerned about the portrait, which is cool for you. but in general, I think those aspects of stories are not inconsequential and I like secrets recognizing it!)

you know, you dont have to like every single aspect of the books to still be a fan. I consider myself a fan and I disregard most of the last two books.

I think the point of the portraits is that they are just shadows of what they were. Its like a simple form of theirselves.I don't think they can learn or act too much of what was expecting of them when they were painted. And as the magic were off they just become parodies, like sirius's mother or that soldier...
I think i would have think it more of a cop-out if Harry had spoken with dumbeldore's portrait earlier. But he had to walk alone and discover everything before he could spoke to him, to me it locked more like a clousure.

I agree. I think that if he'd talked to Dumbledore trying to find the Horcruxes, it would have been a cheap way to lessen the effect of Dumbledore's death. But since Harry did have to do it all by himself, talking to Dumbledore as a picture, I think, was actually a bit bittersweet since it was essentially happy, but the fact that it's a portrait is a sharp reminder that it's merely his shadow, not the man himself.

Just my humble view on it.

I felt it was a cop-out too. But really, I was so fuming at Dumbledor's prick ways by the end of the 7th book, I hardly cared.

That is one way to look at it. How I saw it was that... well. It's not Dumbledore, and quite honestly it hurts a bit more because of that. It may have his memories and act like him, but Dumbledore is dead. That's a doppelganger, a copy, but it isn't the magnificent bastard who helped save the world more times than we can count. It can recite his whole life from 'memory', probably, but it's just been programmed that way.

It isn't real. It's just pretending to be.

THIS. I said something similar in an earlier comment, but I think it's actually more bittersweet and emotional because you're almost constantly reminding yourself that it's not really Dumbledore, just his shadow, his doppleganger as you put it. He's dead, and no amount of magic can bring him back. Personally, I think that Rowling did a brilliant job with that part.

This is a cop-out, yes.

However, I thought it was a FAR more egregious cop-out for Dumbledore's questionable beliefs in his youth to be conveniently and neatly tied to his love for Grindelwald rather than, you know, him actually having ingrained bigoted views himself that he had to struggle to overcome.

I always hated that "my only crime is that I LOVED TOO MUCH!" bullshit.

(Don't get me started on Lily being more or less the only thing motivating Snape to do anything good either. Character complexity is something that happens to other people.)
