The fake-news fandom is so friendly, regardless of who/what you ship. Everyone's so lovely and funny. I wish I could get into it more myself but I feel like a moocher for not contributing anything.

If you've only recently joined, you missed the heyday for that sort of thing. I've been in the fandom for just over four years now. It used to be less about shipping and fic.

Loving the punditslash secrets today! Brian Williams definitely deserves some fic, especially after the Inside The Whitehouse specials. Brian/Rahm, maybe? (What really happened after Rahm threw all the cameras out of his office.)

Just a question: When did the fandom start calling it "punditslash"? I ask only because it wasn't called that when I joined and that seems to be the terminology everyone is using now. I feel old when I refer to it as anything else.

I honestly don't know. I came in through the Daily Show/Colbert Report slash comms about three years ago and I'm pretty sure the phrase was in usage then. (I just check and the punditslash comm was created in 2004.) I don't know if the form existed prior to the break-out of the fake news programs and then the crossover with the real pundits.

And of course the use of "pundits" to describe the talking heads screaming at each other on CNN etc, rather than the actual reporters delivering the news, kicks in big time in the late Clinton period.

(I now have the horrible urge to write historical punditslash with Huntley & Brinkley.)

I think the confusion for me came from the fact that I came into fake news fandom pre-Colbert Report, but have only really just started to get into the slashing of pundits.

Fandom history:

For a long time it was "Daily Show fandom" at tds_rps and "punditslash" over at punditslash, and they weren't really connected. When TCR kicked off, people started referring to the first as "fake news fandom". At some point a large proportion of fake news fandom realized they had a shared thing for Anderson Cooper. And a couple of writers started writing "Keith, Anderson, Stephen, and Jon are a group of buddies who go out for drinks and have clever banter" fics (the Pundit Round Table).

So now you may see people referring to fake news fandom (of which favorite pundits and anchors are often considered honorary members); real news fandom; fakenews/realnews/political RPF; punditslash; punditfic; PRT fic; and/or punditry. Depending in part on how you came to the fandom (looking for Jon fic, Anderson fic, Rahm fic?), and which shows/people you focus on.

Thanks for explaining this. I came into the fandom right before The Colbert Report started. At the time, we hadn't yet realized our shared love of Anderson Cooper. And then PRT started in a section of the fandom I wasn't frequenting at the time. I have always called it Fake News Fandom.
