It's times like these I wish I knew another language so I could help. I'm sorry you feel that way. :(

[identity profile] ali-wildgoose.livejournal.com 2009-06-04 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd make sure that it's clear you're not a native speaker, just for the sake of full disclosure. That said? I have an enormous amount of respect for people like you. I've never been able to carry on a normal conversation in another language, let alone write a story. Bravo for putting in the effort and making us mono-lingual Americans look bad <3 <3 <3

[identity profile] websofseaweed.livejournal.com 2009-06-05 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
THIS. 100 percent. I've been studying another language for over four years now and I still can't imagine writing fic in it. You rock! :)

[identity profile] srsfnbsns.livejournal.com 2009-06-04 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Get a beta. My Italian friend twists my arm and makes me edit her Engrish all the damn time! Besides, it's only by writing in English that you'll get better at it. Keep going!

[identity profile] wicked-seraph.livejournal.com 2009-06-04 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I have tons of respect for those who manage to write fic well AT ALL in a different language. I'm too afraid to attempt fic in Spanish; I have a hard enough time overcoming writer's block as a native English speaker, let alone with my atrocious Spanish! D:

Just note in your fics that English isn't your first language, and find a good English-speaking beta who can help with the trickier aspects of the language. Also, writing leads to improvement - if you keep writing, you'll eventually get better. From what it seems like, your English is already very, very good.

Tons of kudos, and don't get discouraged - keep writing! ♥

Look, as a non-native English writer myself, all I can tell you is that you need to practice like anyone else (and just because they're native, any given writer is so not automatically better than you) - write a lot, get someone you trust to read it over and tell that person to be as honest with you as they can be. Don't use the English as Second Language bit as an excuse for writing that you yourself aren't satisfied with and try to build up some pride in your words. They're precious, more so for taking more effort than your regular native fan's.

I get really annoyed when native English speakers talk of ESL-writers as somehow less capable, and it doesn't help if we promote that stereotype. It takes time and dedication, but you will be as good as any native writer, if you practice. There's really no point in crying about being treated badly for being obviously non-native if what you want is for people not to be able to tell at all, and that requires you to do something about it.

There are often beta-finder communities in your specific fandom, and I've heard of general beta comms and fic crit places. I can try and look around if you want.

This.

And heck, I'm a native English speaker and I couldn't have told that you aren't from this comment. If I were the OP I'd take your advice to heart!

[identity profile] dimwit90.livejournal.com 2009-06-04 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I have tons of respect for you already for just attempting to write in English. There are many of us who speak English fluently and have never had the balls to write so please don't get discouraged!

[identity profile] bamf-girl.livejournal.com 2009-06-04 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't worry, OP, there are plenty of native English speakers who can't write for dog shit, and I'm sure anything you're painstakingly putting out is better than theirs.<3 Keep trying, we'll keep reading!

This.

Very true. It depends on their level of education. People out of fandom do very poorly in school and especially in English.

[identity profile] matitablu.livejournal.com 2009-06-04 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I sorta hear you - it's not really the native speakers that make me self conscious about writing in English, I do it all by myself :D When I write in Italian I feel like I have full control, while in English it's always less accurate, like having to perform surgery with knife and fork instead of with a scalpel. Anyway yeah, finding an English speaking beta is probably the only way to go.

(Anonymous) 2009-06-04 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Some of the best damn English fics I've ever read have been by an Italian writer. Heck, she betas MY fics and I'm a native speaker (but a really crappy speller).

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2009-06-04 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry. I hope you do find some more accepting people. Try looking off-LJ?

[identity profile] clayangel.livejournal.com 2009-06-04 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, unfortunately, if you want to be recognized in an English-based community, you're going to have to be able to write English really well. In my fandom, one of the BNFs is a non-native English speaker. She's also a damn good author.

Along the same vein, I know that were I to join a French community, I could do little more than sit back and watch, and that would be frustrating as hell. It would depend on my level of dedication on whether I would practice and study and get better at the language. So what you do is up to you.

Edited 2009-06-04 23:47 (UTC)

that's because there are few people ...

(Anonymous) 2009-06-04 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
who started learning english at a very early age and are diligent about learning. You can't niche that with others who have just started learning the language and trying very hard to accomplish a story in english.

Exactly.

Well, if it's any comfort at all, I once had an Italian friend who was very active in Digimon fandom, and she was a prolific fanfic writer. It was always obvious that English was not her native language. Although this introduced some errors into her writing, there was a really marvelous trade-off in that she had the ability to use English in ways most native speakers would never think of.

In short, it made her innovative.

Keep writing. Ignore the haters. As someone else in this thread has said, make sure that people are aware that English is not your native language. You might not be getting a lot of attention for your writing efforts, but remember that a lot of very good writers who ARE native speakers also are overlooked in their respective fandoms. Just take it in stride, and remember to make it about your fun first and foremost.

My last bit of advice: talk to people in your fandom. Don't just post fic, but go to various comms and forums and be social. You won't feel so left out if you remember that fandom doesn't have to be about producing things. Sometimes it's good enough just to love what you love.

[identity profile] hiidenuhma.livejournal.com 2009-06-05 01:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't usually like to underline the fact that I'm not a native speaker. I don't know, I just feel like it makes people focus more on spotting mistakes than the actual story, so I just don't mention it. (Weirdly enough, I get more comments about grammar when I'm writing in Finnish, but I guess that's because I'm more used to writing in English so my fics in Finnish are just not as good...)

But like others have said in this thread, it's not like all native speakers can write amazing stuff and non-natives just suck by default. Good grammar doesn't make a story great. Keep practising and you'll get there.
