If it's not a very obscure language, you can always copy/paste the descriptions into Google Translate or something of that nature. And if you keep an eye on things, eventually you'll be able to pick out certain character names from the rest of it and might be able to search for it (I look for ザ・ソロー and ザ・クエスチョン).

Well if they're good drawings you should be able to tell. Like the one you used is easy. Naru is in black and looking annoyed. Gene is being an attention whore.

I can see your issue. Both of their personalities are very different, so it would change the meaning of the picture depending on which one it is (particularly if Mai is in the picture as well). I would find out how the character's name is look in Japanese and look for that, like kinosino suggested.

Pretty much what kinosino and klmnumbers said.

Babelfish might help, or even just learning how just Naru & Gene's names are written. and as a general rule, Gene will be whichever one that smiles. Also, Gene is normally depicted wearing white or light colors in about 75% of the Ghost Hunt fanart I've seen, while Naru is almost always depicted wearing black.

Man, I love that series. I need to draw Ghost Hunt fanart. Is there a comm on LJ?

Eugene or Gene: ユージン (taken from the Japanese wiki (http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%82%B4%E3%83%BC%E3%82%B9%E3%83%88%E3%83%8F%E3%83%B3%E3%83%88) because I'm really bad with katakana @_@)

As for comms, there are spr_ghost_hunt and shibuya_pr, and they might have links to a few more. =3

Look up the series/character in the English Wiki, then highlight and copy the names from the page for that series/character in the language you need. If it's not on Wiki, try places like animenewsnetwork.com, myanimelist.net, or go to the series' official website.

In the case of Ghost Hunt and Japanese productions in general, it's best to eventually learn the Japanese "alphabet" (hiragana, katakana) or at least how to convert between kana and romaji.
