I'm not involved in POTO fandom but wow, that's a bit harsh.

I read an adaptation of the book in middle school, long before I knew what shipping was, and still wound up shipping Erik/Raoul to the same degree as I shipped Erik/Christine. I don't participate in the fandom whatsoever, but all the same I'm sorry I ruined it for you. :(

Um, it's been a while since I've participated in the fandom, but are there really that many Erik/Raoul shippers? Surely they are few and easy to ignore? I've probably read exactly one Erik/Raoul story in the three years I spent in the fandom. 8P

They're an extreme minority, which is why I'm curious as to why it upsets OP so much

You know, if you don't like Erik/Raoul slash, then here's an idea for you: don't read it. It's not even like a huge percentage of "phans" ship it. Phantom is the least slashy fandom I've ever taken part in so far.

You know what I think has fucked up the fandom more than anything? Elitists who feel like they have to look down on others for shipping the "wrong" pairing or liking the "wrong" actors or enjoying the "wrong" movie version or favoring the "wrong" production of the stage show. That's certainly the reason that I don't participate in the fandom anymore and haven't for a while.

And all of this comes from someone who doesn't really read slash in the first place. :P

God forbid people like a crack pairing. And God forbid they write it badly, either, because God knows all of the Erik/Christine fics are on a par with Les Misérables. Did a Erik/Raoul shipper run over your puppy?

Seriously, I don't get what the problem is. Pairing fic is usually clearly marked as such, so it really is a case of "don't like, don't read".

I should've used Marius/Éponine as an example of ignoring a pairing that is both common and often badly-written. I mean, it's all over the Pit, but I don't think there are brick-lover brigades going round flaming every wish-fulfillment author in the category.

Seriously, though, if you don't like slash, don't read it, just like the people replying above have said. POTO has fewer slash writers than most other fandoms, but posting anti-slash secrets isn't going to make us stop writing.

I've seen POTO 3 times; once on Broadway with Thomas James O'Leary and twice on tour. You're not missing much. It's pretty horrendous.

The Leroux novel on the other hand... is fantastic. =D
I'm partial to the Claude Rains film, too.. even though it totally screws with the novel. Kopit/Yeston's musical version isn't terrible either.

I liked the Claude Rains novel against my better judgement; sure, it screwed around with the plot, but it was still pretty freaking good. I agree with you on the Kopit/Yeston version too.

you mean the claude rains flick, I presume. Yeah, I loved it for some bizarre reason. Probably because I had a weird crush on him. Kopit/Yeston has a special place in my heart because I was in a production of it, haha.

I have my own issues with certain slash pairings, but as for fucking up the phantom fandom, really? I hadn't noticed....

On a different note, I cheer you for using an old-school picture. Lon Chaney Sr. will always be the Phantom to me. I need to get out the old silent version and watch it all again. (Mind you, I never found him as frightening as the movie wants me to. He just looks like a guy with bad teeth and a receding hairline. He was scarier with his mask on.)

Grow a bigger dick. I am by no means a fan of the ship, but honestly, you should be thanking your lucky stars if you hate it so much that it is what it is because I know how we slashers are and considering our ability to jump on any male/male pairing, R/E is INCREDIBLY small. It hardly even happens--you could very easily ignore it. SO STFU and stop being a judgy asshat.
