Okay, but seriously. I'm not sure I understand. For one thing, yes, it is unusual for Asian people to have white skin and blue eyes, from my experience. Maybe not impossible, but unusual.
Secondly, if someone has white skin, I will describe them as white. It doesn't necessarily mean anything about their race, I'm just describing them as white. The same way saying someone has brown skin doesn't mean that person is of any particular race --- they just have brown skin.
This is why I always get a bit confused by the Avatar discussions, especially with a character like Aang, who certainly appears very pale and, well, white (unless that's just the few pictures I've seen of him. I've watched maybe one episode of the actual show, and he was pretty pale then, too, I thought).
To me, it doesn't make sense to change the colour of his skin in the movie, just because his culture is based on Asian cultures in the real world.

There is a difference in casting a Caucasian actor to pay a character in an asian fantasy world and casting an Asian actor to play a character in an asian fantasy world.
Skin color isn't the only thing that defines what a person looks like.
That, on top of casting Caucasian actors to play naturally brown characters and having one of them imply "he'll just get a tan" and it'll be fine... yeah.

This is absolutely true, but it is one of the describable features. And when I look at Aang, the description that comes to mind for me is 'a short boy with pale skin', so, yes, I'd say he has white skin and that it's not necessarily wrong to cast a person with white skin to play him at all. Nor would it be wrong to cast an Asian to play him, for reasons of better fitting the culture that his character's is based on. To me, it's an either-or non-commital situation, because as I see it his skin colour is easily closer to pale than it is to any other.

Oh thank goodness that you don't think it'd be wrong to cast an Asian actor to play a character that is clearly based on an Asian culture. I wouldn't want an Asian person to look strange in Asian clothing in an Asian setting or anything.

I wasn't aware I was supporting white-washing --- I was just trying to state an observation.
I completely agree that that is not a world occupied by Caucasians, as far as I can see. But as I mentioned somewhere else, I think (for a different secret), there's a difference between one's race and the actual, first-glance colour of one's skin. For instance, I am part Asian by blood, but I have the palest skin of everyone I know, so, if someone were to describe me, they'd have to describe me as 'white'.
I understand that this is, of course, not exactly the same situation, but... you know what, I think I'm getting confused over the word 'white' as a descriptive adjective versus a term describing race. To me, describing someone as white isn't the same as declaring them Caucasian at all.
Er... and I have a bad feeling that I've been using those terms wrongly, then...

I wasn't aware that describing a character according to his appearance meant I defaulted every race to Caucasian. :/ Though it's probably possible. I mean, I guess you learn something new everyday... I do think that the picture of Aang's actor looks very much like Aang in the cartoon, though --- aside from looking rather younger. So. :/
About the colour of monks' robes that was brought up in the racebending link. Is it at all possible that the makers simply do not wish to cause offense by using real religious and/or cultural clothing in a fantasy world? After all, it is similar to our world, but it wouldn't make sense if they were exactly like the real cultures they're based on in this world... is it possible they thought it might be considered mocking, or something?

I apologize for my apparent ignorance on this subject --- I never looked at it that way...
Though, when it comes to my main fandom, Code Geass, I really must say, it is impossible to tell who is supposed to be Japanese and who is supposed to be Britannian unless specifically mentioned in the show. That's what I was going off of, personally.
And I'll admit, I do think a lot of the shonen stereotypes of big strong men don't look anything like the Japanese men that I've seen --- they tend to have the square jaw/chin, etc, in shonen. :/

Eh, I think men have squarer chins in general, tbh. But I can see that sometimes too. Though I do also see more that some traits can be found in other ethnicities as well, just not as often. (Though, I also have a hard time thinking of many anime character with square chins as it is, so... xD)

First one I was thinking of for square chins was Ooishi from Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni. Also, a lot of background/canon fodder/crowd characters, especially men (and often in shonen macho-guys) have rather square chins, or so I've always thought.

Ah, probably a lot of anime I haven't really heard of then. I tend to watch the mainstream shows and a few outside of that (Moyashimon comes to mind for that... xD), so I just watch a lot of variety and as such don't see too many shonen with guys with square chins. At least, that's probably why I don't anyway. x3
