I love it when people say this, as if someone being upset about this clearly means that they do nothing else in their everyday lives to fight racism. I don't really understand where that assumption comes from. I find, personally, that if someone has an activist frame of mind, that doesn't change, whether they're at work or school or in the streets or on the internet.

Also, culture is incredibly important—culture is where these things get worked out, and in places that aren't so diverse, like where I grew up in Maine, most people got their experience of non-white folks from TV and movies.

So, yeah, the sitting on their asses thing, not so much. And also, they don't have to prove their cred to you.

I also don't get the theory that *really* caring about racism is demonstrated by defending long traditions of racist casting and stopping people criticizing studios making those decisions about representations in media--which is a huge part of most peoples' lives in the modern world. Like it's better to discourage any complaints about anything until you feel it's really important--though most important things have been taken care of already, it seems. (Also sometimes there's the argument that the casting doesn't matter because it's intended to be a popular action movie with big box office appeal. Like save your complaints for the tiny arthouse Oscar contender for best art direction because it's more serious.)
