Too be fair, the moral justifications were already there. They just got worse when people forgot they're allowed to dislike things that aren't Evil.

+1

People used to accuse others of wanting to fuck their siblings if they shipped incest, were abusers or rape apologists for shipping something very fucked up, etc. Social media as it is amplifies those voices sure, but the idea that it was never like this is very weird to me as an m/m and f/f shipper of old who used to be told I was going to hell for 'sinning' with my gay ships in the early 2000's. And that isn't getting into if they found I out I was actually gay, hooo boy got banned from a het-ship comm because of that. But it was a pure, non-toxic time in fandom, for sure. :)))))

Yeah, I had similar experiences. I'm queer and I wrote (and still write) a lot of gen and boy howdy there was a lot of "purity" shit going on in gen parts of pretty much all fandoms. And the whole "it's fine to include background het ships in gen fic because that's normal, but not background gay ships, ew." I was really thrilled when the homophobic part of it seemed to be dying out in mainstream fandom (there were still pockets of it in particular fandoms, like cop shows and Stargate and dude fandom, but easy to avoid). But no, now it's purity for *all* ships, and ship wars get turned into moral quests and social media means it bleeds all over the place.

❤️❤️❤️

Yup. Can confirm this shit was around at least 20-25 years ago in smaller spaces. But now the idiots seem to have found each other and are swarming all over the place. Even in "safer" fandoms once dear to me. Ugh.

fandom conflating "squick" with "trigger" has been particularly insidious

(Anonymous) 2023-05-07 05:58 am (UTC)(link)
And fandom deciding that a squick isn't a good enough reason to not want to see something has made "trigger" the only word option for many...

(Anonymous) 2023-05-07 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
I completely agree. Also YKINMK (and that's okay).

(Anonymous) 2023-05-07 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. I also think Your Kink Is Not My Kink And That's OK needs to become a thing again, along with Don't Like, Don't Read.

(Anonymous) 2023-05-07 01:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Especially Don't Like, Don't Read. The amount of comments I see under fic going "I hate this character/ship/trope so much". Then why are you reading it???

(Anonymous) 2023-05-07 02:06 pm (UTC)(link)
DA

Research purposes? (While I haven't done this with fanfic, I have done this with some novels to try to understand why people hold certain opinions.)

Protesting too much? Or maybe it's like those fundies who have to watch a lot of porn, just so they can tell everyone else how bad it is.

I really like the colors of this secret.

(Anonymous) 2023-05-07 06:46 am (UTC)(link)
Overall, I agree with the sentiment, anon.

I get the impression that I'm watching the tide turning, lately, and the dogmatists who used to be able to access social approval for their little spectacles of petty judgement are playing to dwindling and less sympathetic audiences. I don't know what's getting people over their susceptibility to just believe it, when some melodramatic no-account asserts the only reason other fans could possibly like something that the speaker detests is because they are all morally deficient, but I would love to understand why people finally seem to be getting fed up with that narrative. And, as far as I'm concerned, that's long overdue!
