Yeah, I haven't seen it either. I've always had the impression I would kind of hate it. Everything I've seen of it makes it seem like very much not the kind of thing I enjoy.

It portrayed nerdy men and being a nerdy man as cool. So I get why it is popular among the type of crowd that loves cult-status type things.

It's an OK movie but it's definitely not the level of thing that you should worry about missing out on. It's just a random normal indie comedy that happened to blow the fuck up for no reason because the mid-00s were just like that.

The trailers (and any clip I've seen since) were irritating to me and I always figured the full movie would annoy TF out of me. So, yeah, this movie is really not for some people (honestly, no movie is truly universally liked and that's okay).

Eh. Only to the extent that they both have painfully awkward teenagers as their protags.

Otherwise, the plot lines are just the world’s most stereotypically late 90s/early aughts indie fare. Awkward, vaguely hard to watch protagonist with painfully embarrassing family does boring everyday shit, only with the quirkiness and second-hand embarrassment turned up to eleven.

Now I'm really confused, Napoleon Dynamite is one of my favorite movies but I was very upset by Welcome to the Dollhouse to the point where I couldn't finish watching it.

The comedy in WttD is darker. Also, you related to Dawn so the movie making fun of her was more upsetting for you.

I ended up passively watching this a lot in college (one big open dorm room with 3 other gals, 2 of whom loved the movie...). You aren't missing anything.

I read the screenplay and had full body cringe from secondhand embarrassment. No regrets at not watching it, not ever.
