What did he do to the actor other than killing off his character?

Lied to him about how he was going to be a big part of the show, everytime he asked JMS about screentime JMS said he was saving the big stuff up for the next season. The guy bought a house based on JMS promising him an ongoing role. He really screwed him over, just because he didn't want it getting back to the network he was defying them and jerking them around.
