I shipped Spike/Xander back in those days! And I remember quite a bit of Spike bashing from the anti-slash crowd back in the day, mostly centered on the attempted rape and how we're all rape apologists and monsters if we ship Spike with poor defenseless human Xander.

Oh my god. I can totally see it, but I had no idea. I was close enough to read the fic, but didn't hang around the fandom enough to see people editorializing like that.
