I'm in my 30s and still writing fics about adults (currently in a fandom where the majority of characters are coincidentally my age), so I haven't had that problem myself. But then again, I suppose it entirely depend on the fandom that you're in. Sorry that you've hit a rough spot fanfic-wise OP.

(Anonymous) 2023-05-11 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's hugely fandom dependent. In my main three fandoms right now, one has a huge age range of characters and the most written-about are the 20-30 year olds; one has mostly adult characters and the two main groups written about are the old men and the 20-somethings; the third has three generations of characters but the teenagers are by far the most written about. But that doesn't help if you've only got one fandom interest right now and it's all about high school!

Yeah, my own main fandom has teenage protagonists but the two biggest ships in the fandom are between two characters in their 20s and a character in their 20s/a character in their 30s. It really all depends on the fandom.

I feel your pain.

I was once in a fandom where the show had legit adults but for some reason the trend in the fandom was High School AUs. Happy for those people, but sad for me who does not at all want to read about teenagers and high school drama.

I'm just getting an error where the image says it was removed.

Thanks, anon. I'm not being able to see the main link either, but yours works.

Ditto.

A transcript of the secret in case anyone is curious what it had said:

"I find myself less interested in shipping teenagers and 20-somethings, the older I get.
I assumed it would be the same for writers, but I'm finding it significantly harder to find fic containing older characters. Have older writers just stopped writing, or are they writing about current teenagers?
It's rather depressing, realizing that you're starting to get too old for your 20+ year hobby."

(Anonymous) 2023-05-11 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for this!

(Anonymous) 2023-05-11 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, yeah, I get that.

Most of the fandoms I get into are more adult-focused, and have been for a while-- and I hate when I find a fandom about adults I can relate to and all the fic is high school AUs!

Even in Stranger Things, like... I'm not at ALL interested in the shipping stuff with the younger kids, only really have one ship among the older teens (/20 year olds? or is Steve still 19? Do we even know?), but like... I LIVE for fanworks about Murray where he's not just playing matchmaker for the kids, and I want more fanART of him, and I'm so mad that he doesn't get a funko pop. Pretty sure there's more than one Hopper, there's even a Barb.

That sucks, OP. Older characters are out there! You just have to find the right fandoms.

I'm active in three fandoms right now and they range in age for the MCs. One is teen/young adult. One is late 20s-early 30s. One is 40s-50s. Granted, the most activity is in the teen/young adult, but it's historical so it's not really typical teenaged drama.

Same for me, OP. Not sure when it happened, but I really don't ship teens anymore. Now I really only ship adults.

(Anonymous) 2023-05-11 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
you're not too old, you just have to find books/canons that are centered around adult characters. in my fandom all the 20-something fic writers are shipping and writing fic for characters who are 30 to 40+.

(Anonymous) 2023-05-11 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
It's true but it's also the case that fandoms for canons with older characters are lighter on the ground

(Anonymous) 2023-05-11 06:07 am (UTC)(link)
At least you don't have to deal with fandom teenagers calling you a predator and other fandom adults calling you basic/boring/mentally stunted for being an adult who still likes things about kids and teenagers.

Now, I'd like to have your problem, but the genres I like in fandom rarely have adult characters, and while I like plenty of things with adult characters, it's rarely enough of an interest to be in the fandom (if there is one.)

(Anonymous) 2023-05-11 11:29 am (UTC)(link)
I started out writing older characters and have found myself writing teenagers and late 20s since then. Whatever sparks my inspiration is what makes me write.
