The first song I thought of is "Surface Pressure" which is about how hard it is to 'smile through the pain', so I'm not sure I agree with this.

I don't know all of his songs, though, so I could be way off base (or which are his, I guess I mean)

Maybe OP meant more the tone - that songs message is on point but it's still a fun upbeat song with fun dance numbers.

YEAH, I'm with you there-- I think he does a really good job of acknowledging difficult emotions! Sure, his stuff for Disney is going to be lighter and softer than stuff he writes with an adult audience in mind, it's going to handle heartache and tragedy differently. But still honestly.

No one can just *be* Howard Ashman, but LMM strikes me as the perfect successor, in terms of his skill as a songwriter, but also his skill navigating human experience and emotion and how to best put that forth.

The first song I thought of was Waiting on a Miracle which doesn't try to be quirky or fun at all, it's just about pain.

Yeah, I agree. I feel like LMM's music is like the MCU: it's good, there are real emotions there, but he always uses a layer of humor or irony in order to take the edge off the darkness. I like his song-writing -- it's very good! But it's unable to do sincere, unironic pain, I think.

...Really? "It's Quiet Uptown"? "Burn", even? "Everything I Know", which I don't think is as good, but def doesn't hold the pain at a distance?
