I just listened to this for the first time a week or so ago and loved it.

And I mean, maybe you won't ever write anything as epic, but you'll write something that is its own thing. "Comparison is the thief of joy" and all that jazz. Write the thing you're passionate about!

I just can't get into musicals unless I see them on tape once. Maybe this will be released one day.

I get that. It depends for me. A true musical where there are few or no plot/speaking parts outside the singing, I can handle. Ones where the singing ties the story together, I find myself not able to get into the songs until I've seen the whole play.

If it would help, Hadestown was originally half as long and done as a folk-opera concept album! It's how I was introduced to it and I still haven't gotten around to listening to the musical.

I genuinely love the folk-opera, though.

Oh that's so interesting! And really clicks with the musical imo. I'd love to hear the original concept - do you know if it's available anywhere?

AYRT

If you look up Anais Mitchell on streaming sites it should be under her albums--I know it shows up on Tidal in full. If it's not on whatever you use you can always try YouTube. It's just Hadestown, but it's got the same sort of art as her collab folk album with Jefferson Hamer.

SA

The original CD is out of print, but it's still for sale as an MP3, too. :D

(I really love the original, what can I say.)

Same. Musicals aren't the same when they are just a music. Even if they have no speaking parts. And I live no where near USA or even UK to watch on stage.
Hadestown has some decent bootlegs though but they are not enough.

Do it. Love the music, but its take on Orpheus/Eurydice does nothing for me. (Love Hades and Persphone, though.) I bet you could do them justice!

OP, I've been feeling this way since I saw Black Orpheus. Which I highly recommend!

I hope you get to see Hadestown one day (whether on bwau or if they're on tour) because it's a great take and the actors are amazing.

BLACK ORPHEUS. Seconding that recommendation, it's such a good movie!
