Well yeah, the Legends EU had a lot of crazy, not so great, stuff. Books and books of it, but it still added to the lore at the same time. Luke's love life was notoriously bad. (the Force ghost girlfriend, anyone?) The huge retcon of Dathomir that happened at some point made no sense. (Around the prequels I think b/c the Courtship of Princess Leia was not like that at all and oh no, another girlfriend for Luke!) The Corellian Trilogy had a great bit of lore, but awful story.

I mean, at least Boba Fett KILLED Sarlacc in the Legends EU before he escaped. And if he hadn't escaped we wouldn't have had the Mandalorian Armor trilogy and learned so much about Kuat Drive Yards and the Bounty Hunter's Guild which lore wise is neat. And well, Zahn, and Vietch and Kennedy when they did cloning and brought back Palpatine and turned Luke to the Dark Side for a bit, at least it was interesting and not, whatever IX was.

The problem is they are reusing EU ideas without getting why the EU ideas might have actually... worked story wise. Not that they always did. And by reusing them, to hardcore fans these ideas are trite and have been done better already! And also, it gets confusing on what's canon and what isn't. (We're at a choose your own canon adventure stage.)

I mean, I get it. I spent a few days being irrationally angry about Filoni putting in Space Whales, until I reminded myself it wasn't the Space Whales I was angry about it was "He had to explain hyperspace which needed no explanation." Space Whales are cool. They could be fun. Sometimes, questions don't need to be answered. Like, hyperspace and... how the force works.

I somehow had a moment of stupidity when reading this and thought at first that it was about the European Union. Surely Palpatine was here for like, metaphorical reasons!

But yeah, the star wars EU was a hot mess and a mixed bag of both good and bad stuff, and I think it's easy for people to look at them with rose-tinted glasses.

Same! I got very confused at first but willing to see where the comparison was going!

You can kudos and comment on whichever fic you like, but that's kind of a nasty attitude. Giving kudos to a popular fic you liked doesn't take anything away from a more obscure fic, you can give to both. If you really feel a fic doesn't deserve your attention because a lot of other people like it, you don't have to read it at all.

What was good about the EU is that they were perfectly willing to just give people the freedom to take weird, wacky, wild ideas and run with them. When it was bad, it wasn't for lack of creativity or willingness to try new things. That doesn't mean that it was perfect or amazing, but it's a much better *way* of failing.

Compare to the sequel trilogy, where everything is consciously conducted as a brand management exercise, and despite that the movie trilogy still had no plan whatsoever, and is run like shit, and is constantly cancelling movies and throwing people under the bus.
