I remember watching this with my best friend of the time and absolutely mad for it and being really sad when it was cancelled, but I also have no memories of finishing the show. Hmmm.

IIRC this is a classic "showrunner's plans for finishing the show would not actually have been good" situation but I don't remember why at all

Definitely not the only fan. I own the two seasons on dvd and I still think it was a fantastic show.

YANA but I confess I can’t remember how it ended or much about the major plot lines. I mostly just remember how I felt about the show and I’ve always missed it. This secret made me realise that I’ve forgotten enough that I’m finally ready to rewatch it xx

I feel like this is a show that was before its time. It would have been way more popular if it came out even just a couple years later.

This is so true! It was basically niche!prestige!TV in a time when there wasn't really a public understanding of that as a thing, yet. I mean yeah, prestige TV was in its infancy at that time; it existed. But I don't think it had gained the kind of mass and momentum to really be recognized for what it was, yet. And a show like Carnivale was kind of baffling in the context of the time, because it had the hallmarks of a prestige show, but...was really fucking weird, in a way that most of the proto-prestige shows (Sopranos, The West Wing, Six Feet Under, The Wire) just weren't. A year later Battlestar Galactica came out, and IMO it did a whole lot to explode the concept of prestige TV and suddenly everything could be smart, complex, mature, and nuanced if you wanted to it to be. But in 2003, yeah, I definitely think Carnivale was ahead of its time. I mean, I didn't watch it until 2007 or 2008 and I've always thought of it as coming out some time around 2006; I didn't realize it came out in 2003 until looking it up because of this secret.

I don't know, I think part of why so many fans remember it fondly was because it was cancelled. Some parts of it (like the main male character whose name I can't even remember) were not great, and other parts (like Brother Justin played to perfection by Clancy Brown) were fantastic but might not have remained so. And there was a lot of shit heaped on the female characters (like one of the stripper sisters being left behind as a spirit in the ghost town to presumably be raped in perpetuity). But I loved the circus people and their mysteries.

Oh hell yeah, thank you for reminding me about this show! It was good, and so unique. I remember it vividly, even though I haven't watched it since the 00's. I think maybe a rewatch is in order. Crossing my fingers it holds up okay fifteen years later! (fuck i'm old)

I'm not sure that my heart could take a remake (as you say, the casting was so perfect) but you are not alone in having watched, loved, and been made sad by the early cancellation.
