My brain stopped at the first sentence and was like "of course there's a trio in each trilogy, that's why they're TRI-logies"

The only one that I would say actually had a trio was the last three, honestly. That one was blatant enough that my dad walked out of the last movie, turned to the rest of the family and jokingly said, "So all three of them are getting married, right?"

That was just in the last movie tho. TFA had Finn-Rey and Finn-Poe, but no Rey-Poe, and TLJ did its best to keep them all apart.

I went there as well. Was hella confused until I read the second part of the secret, NGL.

But canon is what actually happens, not what was originally planned but got changed. If a character was originally planned to die but the writers changed their minds, that doesn't make the character actually dead in canon.

I had never heard the Poe was supposed to die thing. I liked him okay in the first movie but hated his character after that. I think it definitely would have worked better if he had died earlier.

The OT definitely had a trio. Including Chewbacca and the droids doesn't really make sense when you consider the relatively limited amounts of agency and character they actually had. They're clearly side characters compared to Han, Leia and Luke.

No, but the fact that they didn't have any idea what to do with the character and didn't have an organic way for him to relate to Rey or Finn is pretty clear in the way he's written from there on out.

Then again, they clearly didn't really have any ideas for Finn's character either - Johnson had to come up with his own ideas for the character in TLJ and then JJ reduced him to just running around screaming Rey's name. And honestly the same is pretty true of Rey as well except that JJ decided to make up a really stupid plot for her instead of giving her nothing to do.

God those movies were a fucking mess.

Hm, that's interesting - I feel totally differently! For me the parts I want to go back and rewatch are the investigation parts. I *hate* the opening parts where we set up all the characters. I don't care! I don't care about the characters. I only want to see the detective be smart and solve things.
