You should look more into the history of WV trying to secede. It's not that straight forward.

Other factors to consider: they are below the Mason Dixon line, they are designated regionally as Southern, and if you go there it's a crapshoot if people you talk to consider themselves Southern or not but they are absolutely dead set on not being Northern.

Yeah but below the Mason-Dixon line also includes Missouri and that's way more Midwestern than Southern. Part of WV is way north of Columbus OH which nobody thinks is Southern.

Now if you called it Appalachian of course no quibble at all, it's dead-center Appalachian, but that region has a lot of overlap with the South without being all Southern itself. (Includes large parts of OH and PA, for example)

I'd say it's about the same level of complicated. Some people say yes, some people say no and you can use geography and history to make either case.
