We've tried parts of fascism at various points in our history, especially in the early 20th with the American Nazi party, the Japanese internment camps and, of course, the Red Scare. Some would argue we've been fascists for decades - not a traditional strong man fascism put a corporate fascism. I don't know if I agree, but by any definition we've been flirting with traditional fascism since 2016.
