(Anonymous) 2023-05-23 06:49 am (UTC)(link)I loved S6, personally, but I do think that the show itself felt a bit OOC during Marti Noxon's time at the helm. I really liked what she did with it, personally, but IMO there's no denying that there was a very tangible shift in the narrative texture and tone of the show when she took over. There's a masochistic, uncomfortable fucked-up-ness to a lot of Noxon's narrative sensibilities that IMO feels quite distinct from Joss's narrative sensibilities. Even at their worst and lowest, Joss's "good guy" characters don't truly hate themselves or believe that they're trash, IMO, whereas Noxon's "good guy" characters at their darkest and lowest very much do.
But like I said, I loved S6 and S7 was my least favorite, so I'm kind of playing devil's advocate here, a little bit.

(Anonymous) 2023-05-23 12:29 pm (UTC)(link)season 6 is out of character because they wanted spuffy at all costs, which meant isolating buffy so that all she had to rely on was spike, which meant wrecking everybody else and turning them into self-absorbed narcissists with inconsistent writing from one week to the next (reminder that spike went from "you glow" to "you're addicted to the misery" in barely thirty minutes of airtime)
season 7 is out of character because they had no clue what they were doing (except spike), decided the main characters had run their course and shoved in some new ones for no logical reason, which meant everyone was reduced to ciphers and irrelevance with stupid writing from one week to the next (like shoving in caleb once they realised that the first evil wouldn't make for an interesting final fight)

(Anonymous) 2023-05-23 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)Pretty much everything weird about S6 just flows from the question "how can we have a sixth season of Buffy The Vampire Slayer with Buffy as the main character, given how we left the character and the show at the end of S5". And then obviously the answer to that question is shaped through the prism of the writing sensibilities of the people in charge.
