He's an exec producer and creator, yeah, but that doesn't mean that he's responsible for everything on screen. To the best of my knowledge, the showrunners are Henry Alonso Myers and Akiva Goldsman. I'm sure he obviously has a lot of influence on the overall direction of the show being the overall head guy in charge of Trek but AFAIK he's not controlling it from a day-to-day perspective, he's not writing it, he's definitely not directing it, and he's not solely responsible for every aspect of it creatively.

I just hate this mindset where fans pick one person involved in production for a franchise to hate and despise and attribute all the decisions they dislike to. And just in general it's a bad way of thinking about TV. *Any* TV show is the result of a collaborative process between lots of different people. And it's especially insulting when you attribute stuff to him that other people actually did.

I can see your point but I think maybe you’re unfamiliar with how this franchise is currently owned, written, and produced. Lower Decks is nothing like any of the other Trek shows or movies since 2009. It is the only one that is different from a rebooted universe. And that difference is, in this case, one specific person. And there are loads of fans for this person and the universe they’ve created and that’s great! And some of them like all the stuff that came before, too. But for Trek there is a huge divide between Roddenberry’s Trek and Kurtzman’s Trek (often wrongly attributed to JJ Abrams). And for Trekkies who don’t like Kurtzman’s Trek Nuniverse but do like Lower Decks, it’s disappointing to see that Lower Decks is being moved into Kurtzman’s Trek. That’s it. That’s all. That’s the gripe. It isn’t about him, it isn’t about what show he directs episodes for, it’s just about him being the creator and ultimate control of an universe that is a reimagining of a beloved existing universe and now he’s getting involved in the one thing he didn’t get involved in before and making part of that new universe that not everyone likes. And no matter how hairs you try to split, it is absolutely HIS universe. So again, OP wondered why fans aren’t excited or are prehating and that’s the answer. Lower Decks wasn’t really in Kurtzman’s Trek Nuniverse and now it’s going to be.

Right, I get that he has a significant role in New Trek, and I get that a lot of people justifiably dislike New Trek, including particularly Kurtzman's role in New Trek.

I just look at what Star Wars fans do with turning Kathleen Kennedy into the devil and building an entire online ecosystem around hating her and spinning wild conspiracy theories out of random feminist T-shirts she wears, and I do not want to see Star Trek fans taking the same approach. And I do think that, factually, the way that nonnies have been talking about Kurtzman's role does significantly overstate his role (he really is not writing and directing every episode) and significantly overlooks the other people involved.

He created and literally owns the universe and is the only constant so it’s not unfair to identify him by name.

I hadn’t heard any of that about Star Wars and think you’re projecting a lot but both fandoms have a history of infighting and toxicity so I can see why you would. I’m gonna look that up when I’m a little more fortified to deal with Star Wars fandom misogyny.

I agree that it's not unfair to identify him by name! I do appreciate where you're coming from.

Also another question - multiple have said that Kurtzman owns the Star Trek universe and.... is that actually true? Like, what's meant by that? I thought Paramount owned the Star Trek franchise and IP?

Paramount has rights from Roddenberry’s heirs and so does Kurtzman. It’s a jumble but he wasn’t under their contract when he created the universe so he owns that IP.

I actually didn’t know about any of that for years because JJ Abrams got all the credit for the reboot movies (which is a great example of what you’re warning against; they were a collaboration from the very beginning!).
