I haven't watched that since I was a child but I remember loving it and do not recall the racism. Eek. I'm wondering if I should rewatch it or just let it live happily in my innocent ignorant memories of my youth.

I haven't seen it in years either, but I wasn't a child on my last viewing and unless I'm confusing it with another movie, the racism is a brief 80s/90s-typical portrayal of East Asians (they all speak broken English in funny way and know martial arts!) not at all central to the story or anything, so it'd be easy to forget.

And don't forget the movie does contain brown face.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-03 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
oh no. really?

Yeah; Fisher Stevens plays Ben Jabituya/Jahveri, an Indian engineer. Also feeds back into the previous comment on the casual racist portrayal of East Asians as Ben is shown making alot of 'comical' mix-ups of American phrases/sayings.

You do have Fisher Stevens in brownface playing a South Asian man, but child me didn't pick up on that one either.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-03 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
Child me didn't realise that either, I liked Ben! He was clever and funny and cared about the robot! But some time in my 20s I happened to look it up on IMDB for some reason and that's when I realised it was full-on brownface. Ugh.

they already did a remake of it

it was called wall-e and they made johnny 5 fall in love with an ipod

(Anonymous) 2023-06-03 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Don't be silly. Wall-E was a remake of The Blue Lagoon.

I'm never unseeing that now, thanks anonny.

I would be so on board with that. Because yes, I watched both movies so many times as a kid that upon seeing one again a few months back I could still hear every line and all the music in my head before they actually happened.

But yeah, as much as I liked Ben in the sense of geeky awkward character, by modern standards he really is rather embarrassing. -_-
