Based on 2

What remakes do you want? And what do you want changed?

Re: Based on 2

I'd like a remake of a beloved childhood classic, and changing the things that I don't like but preserving the things that gave them their intrinsic charm and whimsy. Just for a change, I'd like that, too often they do it the other way around.

We'll never get it, but a Wizard of Oz adaption faithful to the book.

I've seen many, many movie and TV versions of Alice in Wonderland and not one that does justice to the books.

The one with Johnny Depp makes me shudder. Like WTF how did that get made even with famous people involved, it was terrible.

I weirdly liked the one with Tina Majorino. It's probably my favorite, though I've seen it made fun of a lot.

I would love love love an actual faithful to the book remake of A Little Princess (age her up and everything), ditto 'The Secret Garden' (hated the last one - no garden!! WTH?!!) And omg, I think a remake of Gone with the Wind with ALL of the book stuff (Archie, etc.), and a side-plot or whatever of what goes on with the slaves/their lives, would be very cool.

Oh and - a by-the-book (by-the-stories) remake of The Jungle Book would be cool. With the CGI we can do now, it would be so awesome to have the animals all talking and interacting with Mowgli like they did (and get Kaa right, ffsake!!).

There actually is a fairly faithful Little Princess version. It just isn't one of the two better known adaptions. It was made in 1986. Personally it is my favorite because it is fairly faithful, although I do also love the more recent one.

Was that the one where everything was painted green?
Googling only gives me a mini-series in 1986 - i've never seen that.

There's a 1987 TV movie version of The Secret Garden that I loved as a kid that was fairly faithful, IIRC:

Every time a new adaptation of The Jungle Book is announced and it just covers a bastardized version of the first two stories and scattered bits of the third I die a little more inside. I just want to see a proper adaptation of the letting in of the jungle, is that too much to ask? And it's depressing that the only version of the red dogs I've ever seen is an episode of fucking *Jungle Cubs.*

RIGHT??
I want Kaa hypnotizing the monkey king, and almost Bagheera, too. I want Mowglie going to the village and realizing he really doesn't care about being a boy. I want the red dogs, and the last showdown with Shere Kahn, the Bander Log catching Mowgli and the temple they put him in, and the snakes.....
*flails*

did you ever read The Wind Done Gone? it's GWTW from the point of view of one of the slaves and it's pretty interesting.

I made the seaQuest secret already, so there's that. But I would love a remake of Ella Enchanted that was actually anything resembling the book. I don't particularly think the book translates best to a tv or movie, but the one that we did get was so awful I want a new one to make it right.

Peter Pan

(Anonymous) 2023-06-03 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
So this is a weird one, and I know Peter Pan has been done to death, but I would love a Peter Pan movie (or tv series) that was gender flipped. Accurate to the book with zero other changes except for every single gender is flipped. I could possibly be persuaded to have Wendy stay the same, but everything else must be changed.

Oh, that would be very cool.
And more faithful to the book would be awesome - Pan was kinda evil. :D
(and the three 'sexes' of fairies!! "...the mauve ones are boys and the white ones are girls, and the blue ones are just little sillies who are not sure what they are...")

since Peter Pan is usually played by women pretending to be boys, is gender flipped Peter Pan a drag queen?

I'd love a remake of Bram Stoker's Dracula. Doesn't have to be 100% faithful, but one that sticks closer to the book. No modern AU where Dracula is a wealthy CEO or whatever. Lots of lush cinematography, flawless British accents and a big wardrobe and wig budget.

I want a Dracula remake that centers on the friend group and their efforts and growth in the fight. The suitors giving blood til they're ready to pass out! Psychic Mina! Jonathan with a knife!

I know the idea of a new Neverending Story movie gets floated around periodically, I always see people complaining about how studios are only remaking old things and it annoys me every time because The Neverending Story is absolutely one of those properties that actually *deserves* a new adaptation. The 80s movie screwed up the ending and barely covered a third of the book. An actual faithful adaptation would be amazing.

Re: Based on 2

(Anonymous) 2023-06-03 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
I absolutely understand where you're coming from, but for me the Neverending Story will always be the perfect movie.

Re: Based on 2

(Anonymous) 2023-06-03 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Problem is, I tend to think the films that would benefit most from remakes are obscure ones with an interesting concept badly handled-- but they're so obscure that the risk-averse studios are never going to touch them. Like The Asphyx. (Look it up)

Captain Planet, same tone and characters as the original. Just update the setting from the 90s and make the Wheeler character Canadian.
