And many new fans have experienced exclusion and rude behavior for something they hadn’t done by older fans like the ones you’re defending without question. You can blame people for acting preemptively, because it’s not really justified in this case to generalize and lash out at every new fan. Because just because you’ve experienced this, doesn’t mean everyone targeted deserves this. They’re people behind the screen just like you are. And there’s just as much of them who earnestly want to be part of fandom, which they have just as much of a right to do as you, and are treated with exclusion and disdain, than there are assholes. You and the people you’re defending could also take similar advice you’re giving to OP. That is, try to think for a moment before painting things in broad strokes.

I don’t mean to be rude, but bad behavior when it comes to exclusion is a two way street in fandom, where both old and new fans have the equal possibility of being either exclusionary jerks, or honest fans just trying to have fun and be part of a community.

I’m genuinely sorry for what you’ve experienced, though. It wasn’t right, and you didn’t deserve it at all.

SA

Strike the “without question” part of “defending without question”. That was unnecessary of me to say, and probably was untrue.
