Agreed. And I'm still salty we haven't gotten a patch that gives achievements for all the flags you could collect.

I don't want to get my hopes up, but the first thing I thought when I watched the Mirage trailer was "Please use all the work you put into this to remaster the original!"

It will always be included in my favorites because I remember playing it when it came out and being blown away and having so much fun, but it's definitely not alone in my favorite AC games.

I wonder, have you played it recently? I tried replaying it and got really frustrated with some of the older limitations and never finished the play through. Still a favorite game, but not a favorite I replay a lot.

Yes, I play it every time I get a new gaming computer. Most recent was near the end of 2020. It's the AC game I've replayed the most.

I never buy games at full price, but I would for this one remastered. Sure, the old controls are clunky (and Altair should be able to swim goddammit), but the game actually made internal sense. You had to investigate and eavesdrop and get the good will of the citizens. Every assassination could be stealth, and had to be done with the hidden blade. You had to provide proof of death. I felt more immersed in the actual assassin world.

The games after, you don't really need to even follow the story. It will just place a marker and tell you exactly what to do. Sometimes the history was so poorly explained that even though I payed close attention to the plot I had no idea why I was killing some guy. As much as I like the other AC games, they feels like a particularly historically accurate RPGs, not Assassin's Creed.

I agree with a lot of your points, but also let me horrify you for a moment and say that, along with the original, Odyssey and Origins are my next favorites. I understand they are pretty hated by the AC community but I just adore the characters, story, and gameplay. I totally understand why people think they don't fit but they were the first AC games I played since the original that inspired that sense of joy for me.

I imagine the way people feel about Odyssey and Origins is the way I feel about Valhalla. That game has zero AC feel to me and was a complete disappointment.

Edit to add: I just looked up and realized a new game is coming out that is supposed to be closer to the original - are you excited about it? I'm on the fence. Honestly I'm sick of playing dudes, one of the reasons I loved Odyssey was because of Kassandra. (I know it shouldn't matter, but it does to me.) But I'm intrigued by bringing back some of the original feel.

I also love Odyssey (and Origins). I'm on my second play through of Odyssey right now. Of all the other AC games except the original those are my favorites (I haven't played Valhalla yet). They're really good games, but that's all they are to me. It's like playing Witcher and just having it be titled Assassin's Creed.

The Ezio trilogy felt a bit like AC games, but after that the feeling kinda just dwindled. So I have had no expectations of any AC games feeling like actual AC games. Until the trailer for Mirage, which actually got me excited for an AC game as opposed to just a good looking RPG.

I get that. I have a liking for spin offs and backstories, so they still feel like they're in the same world for me just...different. Not sure how to explain it. My brother and I played the originals together and he feels very similar to you, where the rest were okay games but not really AC games. He's pretty much given up on the franchise, which I can't really blame him.

"You are an ASSASSIN why are you hunting RABBITS" - me, to my partner playing whichever AC was set in ye olde America. I've enjoyed watching her play through pretty much all of them, but my heart belongs to the first one only. As soon as they became more complex than climb; jump; stab, I tapped out. I am getting my hopes up for Mirage though.
