What program do you use for writing?

(Anonymous) 2023-06-04 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I just got a new-to-me hand-me-down computer that has zero writing software on it. It's been years since I've used anything, but I remember at one point I was using LibreOffice. What other options are there and what do you personally prefer/use?

I used to use Microsoft Works and liked it because it was fairly no-frills, but it stopped working on my computer. Now I use Scrivener, which I adore because it’s great for keeping my drabbles and such organized. The fact that it has a dark mode is a plus too.

OpenOffice Writer. It's not perfect but it gets the job done.

I usually write on notepad.exe and then copy paste it on Word or OpenOffice to add format.
I have no idea why I do that, but if I try writing directly on Word or OpenOffice I stop after a little bit (20/30 minutes). On notepad I can write FOR HOURS.

OpenOffice (as others have mentioned, gets the job done)

And in the past, I did what anon above me does, use regular old notepad.exe to write them.

I write in Notepad and since I only write for AO3 I just add the formatting as I go and then copy paste into a word counter/spell checker to check my stats and tidy up and then into the AO3 box when I'm ready.

Google.docs. You can have any font, size, etc., have 'pages' or just one long writing square, you can even make the 'page' a color, if it helps your vision to not have a bright-white background.

You can download any g.doc as a .pdf, a word docx, etc., and of course - anyone with a gmail can be invited to 'share' the .doc, which makes it super easy for a beta to read and edit (while you watch or not!).

:D

I use a pen and paper because I'm old and remember what life was like before the internet was mainstreamed out to everyone. *cues Little House On the Prairie theme song*

I use a program called GetDiz. I chose it specifically for customizable background colour and font colour. After installing GetDiz the name changes to the uber fancy ... Text Editor, lol. It has some bells and whistles that I never see/never use and they don't crowd the page I'm typing on. For me, this is perfect.

SA - I got it wrong, it's still GetDiz after installation. I was thinking of the one on my phone that is called Simple Text Editor. My brain is so unreliable, jeez.

Out of sheet ease I use Google Docs. The biggest drawback is that sometimes my wifi is spotty and I hate not being able to write because my wifi isn't working good.
