Making money on fan art is a weird area for me. Like I get why people do it and why people buy it, and in general I support making money on anything you can in this capitalist hellscape, but it's also makes me side eye when artists get really upset about people stealing their art for their own gains or copying them or anything. Like...isn't that what you did in the first place?

I mean I get why you don't want to put your name to this opinion, but I'm not interested in coming back to the comments later to see either people yelling at you for being a bad person OR people giving careful, reasonable explanations of the ethics of selling fanart that won't change your mind.

A fic may indulge the writer, but if you liked it, it presumably indulged you as well. If that's what you're looking for, I can't fault you on it.

I mostly just want everyone who ends up arguing with OP and saying making money off fanart is fine to be very specific about whether or not the same is true for writers.

You need a new circle! Fanfic for me (and most of my fannish friends) has always been self indulgent fun. The fics we trade/rec between us aren't always the best written (and sometimes we even say that in the rec) but they are fun. Or hot or sweet or hit some kind of Id.

I mean yeah I've read those amazing works that seem better than many other published fic and I enjoy them, but they don't make up the bulk of my reading and not what I'm searching for. For me when I say I'm on the search for the next great fic, it means I want an epic length fic that hits all my buttons and satisfies me in a way no published or original work ever has. There's just something purely self indulgent and satisfying about fanfiction.
