A fic may indulge the writer, but if you liked it, it presumably indulged you as well. If that's what you're looking for, I can't fault you on it.

You need a new circle! Fanfic for me (and most of my fannish friends) has always been self indulgent fun. The fics we trade/rec between us aren't always the best written (and sometimes we even say that in the rec) but they are fun. Or hot or sweet or hit some kind of Id.

I mean yeah I've read those amazing works that seem better than many other published fic and I enjoy them, but they don't make up the bulk of my reading and not what I'm searching for. For me when I say I'm on the search for the next great fic, it means I want an epic length fic that hits all my buttons and satisfies me in a way no published or original work ever has. There's just something purely self indulgent and satisfying about fanfiction.

A thousand times yes! I am EXCLAIMING my agreement with you and OP! Can we start a circle? Can I join yours? Lol

It's just fic has always been iddy self indulgent fun for me as well!

I read fanfic to scratch an itch. If I'm really hankering for a bdsm abo coffeeshop-front-for-the-mafia!AU, I'm not looking for the Next Great Novel. Fix the grammar, keep the self-indulgence.

Exactly.

Shouldn’t it, though? It seems like Simon & Schuster is missing out on money.

...and then there are people like me: who only read and don't write (mostly because I'm an artist). Don't feel bad OP, I don't think there is the "right amount" of fic one is supposed to read and/or write. You mostly like reading? OK. You mostly like writing? OK. We're all different and contribute in our own ways.
