Games thread!

I mean, I feel this is probs wankbait rather than a genuine secret, but I do feel that it's different to write fic of a published book/a movie/a show because all of those people are getting paid for it while doing that to another fan just feels dirty. All the fans are on the same 'level' so it just seems like a dick move to do that.

I just can’t imagine an AI generating anything remotely worthwhile if I asked it to finish any of my favorite WIPs. Whether it’s ethical doesn’t even seem relevant at this point. But if someone manages to get something satisfying out of it, good for them.

Wouldn't it be even dirtier to do it for someone who is getting paid for it, though? With fanfic, it's not like you're depriving the writer of any money by writing an ending to an unfinished fic. Neither of you is getting paid for it, so honestly, who cares?

I feel like this is less about getting old and more about not being trapped in a timeloop. And sure, you wouldn't age in a timeloop, but if you were Benjamin Button you still would only get to be surprised by that scene once.

Relevant to your interests: Tiaras are 50% off at Claire's.

100% agreed. I watched an attempt to get someone to explain why this was bad, and it reminded me of when Jonathan Haidt tries to get someone to explain why it’s bad to use a flag to clean a toilet. They switch arguments on a dime, and when they run out, they just say it’s bad anyway, because the real issue is simply that it makes them feel icky.

Weekend prospects?

I'm going to have to make an impromptu trip to Boston sometime soon.

What's happening with everyone else?

Lots of sleep and indoors things this weekend as it is supposed to be super hot here in Texas with the heat index being over a hundred. Today was already miserable. Kind of in the mood for a LOTR rewatch honestly.

Monday I'm going to this thing related to Juneteenth and also see my grief counselor.

pretty sure no one's depriving Chris Evans of his paycheck by writing Steve/Bucky fic either.

"every single alien race in a vast universe being played by white actors"

Am I misunderstanding this secret? because that is Worf, played by Michael Dorn, who is a black actor.

no one on the planet is reading fanfic *instead of* the canon media, it's not taking anything away from authors/creators in that regard.

like, they might be disillusioned and stop reading/watching canon and keep enjoying fic, but its not because they just like fic better or because it's free

and the issue of fan-of-fanfiction-fiction is not that it's like...morally wrong to adapt someone else's work, it's that fans are part of a community together. and there are actually lots of mechanisms for writing 2xfanfiction with permission, like remix exchanges and stuff. Most fanfic authors think that's awesome, as long as you link and give credit, just like everyone reading your fic knows what canon it's fic of.

If they...don't want to give you permission, like, why don't they, you know? There's probably some other social dimension going on. Or, in this case, they don't want AI putting their work through an averaging autocomplete meatgrinder.
