Completely new anon who hasn't commented on this thread yet: I'm sorry this has been so discouraging and demoralizing for you. :( Please just keep in mind that while TERFs can and do pop up anywhere and everywhere spouting the same tired old points, including in spaces which are very much NOT welcoming to that ideology, they are a minority.

I don't know, I have been dealing with the same TERF talking points for years on

fail_fandomanon, which basically had to ban discussions of trans issues because EVERY time the topic comes up, you get the TERFs crawling out of the woodwork and people consuming hundreds of comments trying to point out all the issues with their arguments and concerns. I know very well that feeling of being stabbed in the gut where the topic of trans people comes up in a space of progressive/left-leaning women my age that I thought was "safe" and then BAM, those tired TERF arguments I've seen and debunked dozens of times before come out again.

Please don't take ubiquity of the same tired old takes for majority opinion -- in every progressive woman-dominated space I've been in, women making their "gender-critical feminist" "protect women" transphobic arguments have ALWAYS gotten a huge and furious backlash. While it is unfortunately a common enough position to be inescapable in most space, at the end of the day, it IS a truly unpopular position and the majority of people reject these arguments and do not think they are feminist at all.

I agree with you that TERFs are a minority here and it's probably the same couple people who start shit in every one of these discussions. Evidenced by if someone says they're trans or brings up trans people in a discussion that wasn't started by a secret about trans issues, the replies all tend to be positive and no discourse starts, because those couple of TERFs didn't see that comment. TERFs pounce on secrets like this, but you probably won't encounter them in the wild here otherwise.

Wait, I started this comment to say that despite this, FS isn't the place to be if you want left-leaning. The right-leaning attitudes here aren't as bad as being TERFs, but more mild transphobia and about trans headcanons is very common ("I have nothing against trans people but you can't headcanon this character as trans because that would be stereotypical, why do you even think he's trans, is it because you think he acts feminine in some way, you know not every boy who acts feminine is really a girl right blahblahblah") as is Not Like Other Girls misogyny and other stealth right-wing attitudes people who have them don't even realize are right-wing.

Discouraged anon here. I have seen a lot of “pick me” and reactionary tendencies on FS over the years so I shouldn’t be so shocked to see it in this state, but still. It’s chilling to see anons recommending JQ conspiracy theory videos and spouting the same anti-trans twitter talking points verbatim here of all places. I can only hope it’s because the commenters here are, like me, millennials or gen-Xers who are like this because we’re old, and old folks tend to not handle progressive change well.
