There are degrees of awful. If someone has said a few dumb things, I don't want to know. If someone has physically done awful (and criminal) things, I do want to know.

I agree with you on this.
I still enjoy media created by people who got cancelled. Why ? because that doesn't chance that they created and usually it is something which is dear to me because I grew up with it or have fond memories connected to it.

I try to separate the media from the creators/actors etc ...

I know people will jump at me for this but why should I give up something which brings me joy? I can't change the past nor does it do anything if I give up listen to a certain artist or never watch movies / read books that I already own?

Yeah there are degrees of awful, but it seems like most people in Hollywood are pretty awful and it's really ruined my joy. Which I get that it's a pretty privileged position to be able to ignore abuse because it's squashing my joy, but there you have it. I'm a depressed individual living in a capitalist hellscape and barely making ends meet, so I'll take my joy where I can find it.

I think it's just too much work to keep up with celebrity news to enough of an extent to stay abreast of who is potentially shitty. Obviously, if a very famous person does something or someone does something very, very awful, it makes it into mainstream news and I will know about it, but folks of lesser fame doing somewhat less awful things don't get the same attention. I may hear about it, but if I wanted to make sure I knew I would have to put in a lot of effort. I don't want to spend a bunch of my life researching gossip about famous people.

I never smoked them (they got banned before I reached the stage in my life where smoking cigarettes was an option I entertained) but they really did have a cool Bad Boy thing going for them for a minute there in the 00s.

I don’t know if it was your fic or someone else’s but I’ve come across this in fic before and rolled my eyes. Sorry! It’s just that smoking Cloves being cool really is something that only the most exhausting of posers or a 13 year old would think. And in the case of the fic I read, it was wildly OOC.

I still love the smell, oh the memories. I hate that they're banned in the US, I miss them. I never indulged that often (I was a tobacco and weed smoker mostly) but when I did it always felt so deliciously decadent.

I feel like, at least in shonen, the easy answer to that is denial. Or a lack of emotional intelligence. Which, considering that shonen is often about teenage boys/young adults, feels pretty plausible.
