You know what dumb thing bothers me about age reg fic?

It's written by people who have no realistic clue what normal behavior for any age is. It's not meant to be realistic, so it's dumb that it bothers me, but there it is. I can get behind age play where it's general kink play with spanking and whatever because that's not a specific age and not meant to be anything realistic. But a lot of age regression fic I've read is very focused on "what age are they" (like figuring out what 'type' of Little they are is a big plot point) and "proper" childcare techniques by the "caregivers" and it's just all off and clearly written by people who have no clue.

HA, yes.
I don't really like age-regression, but have kind of stumbled into a couple fics with it, and this was a part of why it just...didn't work for me (that and it's...age regression....)

oh my gosh and the baby talk is so BAD, it's ALWAYS written by people who have no idea what actual children talk like, like they just randomly drop letters out of words without any thought to what sounds a small child's mouth is likely to have trouble with??

I'm ALWAYS looking for like... I guess honestly what I *really* want isn't even age regression, so much as re-parenting? Where it's not a sex thing but it's also not 'I'm mentally two years old', so much as 'I had a traumatic lack of a healthy childhood and now I am allowed to safely experience the things I didn't have, and the person/people I love understand this need and may help me heal by offering caretaking/affection/play, or at least understand when I'm having the kind of day where I need a juice box and a coloring book', but no one writes that. So, I read age regression for some characters, but sometimes it's just BAD.

(and dammit, if you can't write a realistic two year old, then DO NOT MAKE your character totally mentally regress to the age of two!)

You have managed to put into words what I have been looking for. I read a lot of age play and age regression and it never quite hits the mark for me but I can never quite pinpoint why and I think you hit it right.

So much agreement on this, but it sort of mystifies me that it would be hard to find, because usually fandom is pretty on target about thinkig over *why* something is appealing and what the focal point ought to be. Even for things that seem subtle and non-intuitive outside of the culture. I mean. Hurt/comfort seems like a related trope, to be honest. This is old hurt/delayed comfort.
