"The wait list is HOW long?"

Boo hoo. That is such a minor problem. Find something else to read in the meantime. It's not hard.

Alternatively, live and let live.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-27 06:06 am (UTC)(link)
And probably loose all interest. Oops

Same here, and I live in a highly-populated city.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-27 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
It really, really depends on your local library's budget. There are several separate library systems in the county I live in, and the one with the most branch locations has about 1/8 the budget of the next largest. The larger system is funded by hotel and construction taxes, and the slightly smaller but way richer one by (sky high) property taxes.

Add in that libraries are charged more per copy of ebooks than individual customers, plus we have to pay to renew the license every 60 checkouts or so, and... yeah.

I don't do ebooks, but just lately I thought I'd give that Goddard/Nine Worlds series a try?
The ENTIRE inter-loan library for my STATE....does not have a single one of her books. Not one. So - libraries and library systems differ.

I know exactly what you mean! I have so many ebooks in my waitlist and so many of them have 0 of 0 copies! I'm like what happened??? Then there is the limit of 7 holds only, and sometimes the holds go from having copies to 0 copies. Or the wait is over 6 months. It's kind of ridiculous for ebooks. Then the publisher has the nerve to complain about piracy. I'm like dude, we are trying to find legit copies at the library. They aren't there.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-27 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
That sounds really sucky.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-27 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, in the US in particular ebook publishers only allow a certain number of loans per ebook then they take it away and the library has to "buy" it again in their next round of book buying. And then the publishers whine about piracy.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-27 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
This isn't my system, I have my own rules, but tbh I think it's a pretty reasonable and fair system.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-27 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Oh man I feel this! Getting a library card in my town was like pulling teeth and I eventually gave up. I can view their catalog online and it isn’t worth getting the card.
But we’re part of a larger metropolitan area and for $40 a year I can use that library which was pretty easy to make happen. They just never have anything we want either because they don’t have it or the waiting list is 18 months long. They have some ebooks but I’ve never gotten the software to work and about half of them are free to read through Amazon or Gutenberg anyway. The most disappointing thing about that library though is that they don’t have the books of even one of the many local successful authors and it’s baffling. I found that out because one of my faves is from that city and was still living there when he made it big but they don’t have any of his books. I started researching other local authors and nope, not a single one in the whole massive city library system that has over 20 branches.

I move around a lot because of my job and while you always need some kind of proof of address to open an account, you rarely need any to renew one, so I've kept up library accounts in four different cities for exactly this reason. One of them will have the ebook I'm looking for. So far it's worked like a charm.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-27 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Personally, it's just a question of patience. There are books that are unavailable online thru my library and I need to go in person to get a physical copy. Both online and physical copies sometimes have wait-list. Sometimes my interest wanes. But it's just a question of convenience and patience (and I can understand the question of convenience being more pertinent to someone who may have issues in easily accessing a physical library). I'm just a big proponent of librairies!

(Anonymous) 2023-06-27 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe this is hijacking a little, but guys please, please support libraries. Most are under attack in a big way, and you can almost always get what you want either thru purchasing requests or loans from in or out of system. The only resource usually required is patience. It's a very real case of if you don't use them, you will lose them.

Anon above you

100%

(Anonymous) 2023-06-27 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
This is also applicable to resource books that are a pain in the ass to pay for, because you need to use them every not very often but they're ridiculous expensive. Looking at you, Writer's Market yearly directory of agents and so forth. (And like ... umpteen other professional guides.)

(Anonymous) 2023-06-27 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, good god. Support libraries for books and study particularly. It ain't hard (though apparently it's too hard for some.) Or they'll turn into daycare centres with cafes attached and they're be nowhere to work quietly without stomach-turning food smells and the clatter of crockery while two videos are playing at once.

The reality plus new plan sounds flawless. You do you, OP.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-27 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
I am with you OP
I do prefer just going to the library and read THERE, but I have time and I don't have brain power to read at home. Sometimes I go to the library with my own (bought) freaking book. Or borrow their copy.
Waiting list is a no. If I am interested in something I am not going to be interested in half-year time. It's not gonna happen. So either I get physical book or pirate.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-27 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
This is why you should get a library card to as many library systems you can. We have regional libraries with each one covering a different area of the country, and I have four cards for four different regions.
