What are you currently watching (or reading or playing)?

What are you watching or reading or playing tonight?

Watching Whose Line UK clips on Youtube and flipping also to this cat family feed I've been following.

Right this second, I'm watching Taskmaster. It's just my preferred background-noise TV show of the moment.

I also have a science fiction book I'm reading that I want to try and read a bit of at some point, it's called Loki's Ring by Lina Steicht, it's all about trying to rescue an AI in a mysterious star system, it's pretty good so far. But I might end up taking a nap instead of reading. I don't know yet.

OOo, that book sounds interesting. but naps are also a whole lot of fun. Enjoy either way.

Playing through FF8 for the first time in maybe 15 years. Up to going to fight Sorceress Adel and doing some last minute things like getting everyone’s ultimate weapons, obtaining the extra guardian forces and stockpiling magic.

Well, I was watching Strange New Worlds S1... Gave it up because it was just too different as a prequel to TOS. Also I couldn't cope with the gloom either literal or metaphorical. I loved the ice-cream colours of TOS and can't believe that the Federation couldn't afford a few light bulbs a mere ten years before TOS!

Tales of Vesperia Definitive Edition. Interesting story and I probably won't play it again after I grind and beat the last boss. Just not a fan of the gameplay at all.

Have you played any other Tales games or is this your first? I'm a big fan of the series, but I couldn't get into Vesperia because I could not make sense of the story.

I had some exposure to the Tales series thanks to that crazy crossover episode with Another Eden. So basically I was familiar with a handful of the main characters from four different Tales games, and they spoke of things unique to their own worlds that didn't stick in my mind. Except for Yuri Lowell complaining about how rich assholes were the same everywhere.

My understanding of Vesperia was that a great conflict took place in the distant past, and the story is told through legends. The conflict itself may have been a result of blastia, which were created by the Krityan race (though no longer in use by them). Blastia uses cores and other (spoiler) crystals that power them. In modern times, blastia is used to power machines, weapons, and city barriers to ward off monsters. The issue with the blastia is that it produces a substance known as aer (pronounced... air). In high concentrations, aer is disruptive to nature, living creatures, and the planet itself, and left unchecked, it can destroy all those things. There are regulators of aer, however, and a large part of the credit goes to another race known as Entelexia, which appear monster-like but are intelligent beings that speak the common tongue. The Entelexia absorb extra aer and process it in their bodies, producing a crystal of highly condensed aer called apatheia that is left behind when the creature dies.

Ten years before the story, there was a great war that was apparently fought between (I think) humans and Entelexia, and it resulted in devastation for all sides, and for the site in which the final battle took place.

Back to modern times, humans are divided between the empire and the union of guilds (though from what I understand, a handful of guilds are not part of the union). Guilds live free from the rule of the empire and are sometimes butting heads with Imperial soldiers. Between the empire and the guilds, there are a few corrupt players doing things their own way in order to gain power, but at the top, someone else is pulling the strings.

Blastia is not the only thing that produces large amounts of aer - there are exceptions to this rule. The Child of the Moon uses healing artes - special skills that are beneficial to mankind but destructive to Entelexia and the planet due to the aer being produced. The one pulling strings behind the scenes schemes to use the Child of the Moon for selfish reasons - I have yet to beat the game so this is not clear to me yet. But it seems they don't care about consequences (not that villains usually do).

Man, I hope I got that right.

You sound like you understood it better than me. Some of your explanation I was able to get from the game, but what made it fall apart was the same thing you're still unclear about, what the Child of the Full Moon was exactly was never clear. I got up to the night before the final battle without it being clear, but I remember being frustrated for the first time when they first told the "story" of the Child of the Fill Moon and (spoilers I think you've played already but I'll be safe) Estelle got really upset and ran off from the party and that was played like we were supposed to know why she reacted that way. We already knew she "is" the Child and some people wanted to kill her for it, but the party had already convinced her that nothing was her fault and swore they wouldn't let her die, so it just came off like there was some new revelation in the origin story that I totally missed.

Continuing doing some stuff in FF14, while also getting used to FF16, which I only just barely started.

All I know for certain is that this Cid is the hottest Cid yet, and his voice acting is apparently polarizing. (I am in the "could listen to this man recite nonsense, probably with muttered profane interjections about it being nonsense, all day" camp.)

I have only played the FF16 demo so far but have watched some videos with Cid and I'm apparently also occasionally listening to him in Diablo 4 right now so yep, great voice.

Hahah yes, I had just posted on Facebook like "no spoiler but holy crap Cid and his VIBES man" and then my phone gave me a "recommended" story about how the same voice actor was FF16's Cid and also in Diablo 4 and has become "the iconic voice of summer 2023". I was like... yeahhhhh so it's not just me.

I'm usually someone who always plays the original dub of a game when possible but in this case, I actually prefer the English dub (which is super, super rare for me) and he's a big part of the reason lol

Ha! I went with the English dub just sort of without thinking about it; after all, the dubs for 12 and 14 are pretty great and 13's is mostly good (I have not yet played 15, but hadn't had a chance to correct that before 16's release, so that's next).

It was only after listening to Cid talk for awhile I thought that maybe I want to replay it with the Japanese voices sometime just because I'm really, REALLY curious what he sounded like there. Because I'm assuming... not that. And I can't imagine anything more perfect. So I'm curious to see what they DID go with.
