Still annoyed that GOT was such a huge cultural hit with the fucking truck ton of needless rape scenes it had.

Yeah, I'm never early to anything cool, but I watched S1 of GOT as it was coming out...and then promptly went "nah" and stopped watching right as it was getting huge, because I was perpetually annoyed at the way it made the vast majority of the sexual content violence and violation based.

I don't even have an issue with graphic sexual assault in stories over all. There are stories where I find it very impactful and feel it was handled well. But with GOT it felt like a fucking world-view or something. The narrative always felt like it was proud of itself for being edgy and "real" in depicting sex the way it did. Sure dudes, whatever, no thank you.

Not only that, but it felt like it was filmed in a way that was meant to be voyeuristic and titillating for the audience. Acknowledging that it's a thing that happens in this universe and having the threat hang there is one thing, but hiring porn stars so you can film a whole rape hut and focus the camera in on scenes of multiple women getting violated is another.

Yeah, this is true, they were constantly going for titillation and then also going, "Look at that ~realism~." That's an issue I have with like 95% of HBO shows, actually (and I'm speaking as someone who likes "prestige" television). They constantly seem to be conflating racy and titillating content with mature and complex content.
