Media you disagree with the critics on

What is some media where you disagree with the general consensus on?

Because I just got back from Dial of Destiny and loved it. Thought it was really well done and really good and felt like an Indy movie.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, apparently. It had all of the stuff I liked about the franchise, some nice character moments, and kept the plot simple and with a good pace.

I really don't understand the low rating on Rotten Tomatoes. What do people want from this movie, exactly?

I really love "Speed Racer".

Initially, I recall Sofia Coppola's "Marie Antoinette" as devisive, mostly maligned as yet another American product ruining historical revisionism of European history ("everyone has their own accent and it's awful that not everyone is speaking French/speaking with either French or British accents").
And to those I say, I fucking love this movie.

I’ve seen a lot more people praising “Speed Racer” recently, so I hope that continues.

I love “Marie Antoinette” too!

I think Mama, Oculus, and Crimson Peak are better than their Rotten Tomatoes scores. And Jennifer's Body is way better than it's RT scores, though I feel like a lot of people--including some critics--have changed their tune on it in the last few years.

Oh, and it has 85% on RT so it's reviews are fine, but The Talented Mr. Ripley is one of my favorite movies, so I guess it counts too.

As far as the reverse goes, Haunting Of Hill House, Arrival, The Host, and Okja were all misses for me, despite extremely strong critical reviews. The first two were cases where I just strongly disliked the ending. With The Host, I think I just kind of hate Bong Joon-ho's style, tbh. I haven't watched Parasite yet, because I disliked The Host and despised Okja. Obviously his style works for lots of people, given how successful he's been, but wow, I am not one of them.

Oh man, I *hated* Haunting of Hill House, couldn't make it through Midnight Mass either, at this point I just feel disappointed when I hear about a concept I'm interested in and see that Flanagan is attached because I Do Not Vibe.

Crimson Peak though... Crimson Peak is amazing, I think people just went in wanting it to be a different movie than it was! Everyone is trying to review it as straight horror when it's a gothic romance.

As a person who dislikes Crimson Peak, you are right. I think it was marketed as a gothic horror at least as I remember it but the movie was straight romance. And the thing is, I hate romance, ESPECIALLY gothic. So it was a huge bummer

Yeah, after Hill House I decided to pass on Midnight Mass, which was probably for the best. If you haven't tried Oculus you could always give it a shot, though. IMO Haunting Of Hill House was basically Oculus 2: Electric Boogaloo. They're distinctly different stories but the thematic and conceptual core is very similar. But Oculus is much shorter, tighter, and less muddled, IMO.

I think people just went in wanting it to be a different movie than it was!

Yeah, that seems to be the case.

IMO it was a gothic psychological thriller wrapped in a romance wrapper and then nestled in a horror gift-box. Lol. And personally I feel like it blends those genres extremely well. I love how much it genuinely feels like it could be a gothic novel from that time period--while still maintaining an unobtrusive undercurrent of post-modern knowingness.

Book critics have subzero standards, that's as specific as I need to be. If an attempt was made at a popular concept, they'll call a book pure brilliance no matter how shit the execution and editing of it all is.

Across the Spiderverse doesn't end on a cliffhanger. The arc of the film is Gwen's and her arc is complete by the end.
