I'm 35. Never heard anyone non British use it. Might be a regional thing?

DA but if anything I consider it a little old-fashioned. Like it was used more in the 70s or 80s.

I heard it fairly often in the southeast US, at least back when I lived there.

I'm 40 and I have definitely heard more Americans use hard-on than boner in the last 10 years or so. And I don't know if I've ever heard an adult use boner non-derogatorily.

Yeah, boner sounds very teenage to me.

AYRT - Yeah, I've mostly heard it from teens/tweens, or from adults specifically referring to "boner pills."

Yeah boner is kids and teens, maybe some early 20s dudebro types also. Everyone else says hard-on whether it’s in the form of saying someone figuratively has hard-on for something or if it’s meant literally. Over 30 tend to just say erection if they’re talking about an erection but then use hard-on figuratively. I’ve lived all over America (and also in England) and that pretty universal in the US.

I've heard hard-on my entire life growing up on the US East Coast.

I'm 36, from the southeast and now live in the PNW, and I've heard hard-on used way more than boner in both areas.

Hard-on is totally common American slang. I've lived in both the South and the Midwest and heard it used a lot in both regions. Might be a little old-fashioned now, but I think it has a shade of meaning a little bit different from "boner" which is kind of always meant to be funny. You could say "hard-on" to your doctor, but probably not "boner."

I'd heard it in the Southeastern US and from various American comedy sources/movies. I don't think I'd heard one more than the other.
