I dislike the trend of turning a canonically nice character dark in shipping fics*. When I'm into a ship with them it's because them being genuinely nice creates a dynamic that I like in the specific ship. Making them suddenly be this a-hole who kidnaps and SAs their partner takes away everything that I came into this pairing for.

*in non-shipping fics, go right ahead, it might be interesting.

He, not my cup of tea either, but I guess it's just people being horny and wanting to play with characters they find attractive in different way. Maybe they just want a story with dark elements and they want the characters to wear their favourites' faces. /shrug

I don't think it's a "trend", though. It's always been a thing in fandom. I think it's especially prevalent in fandom with no obviously dark character (or dark ATTRACTIVE character) and a younger demographic.

There are some characters who are perfectly nice in canon but I could see doing a dark take on them, but oh man, every time I see a 'dark' take on one of my faves, it's just SUCH an intense squick to me, like... partly it's because in canon he suffers from having people assume that he IS that guy when he's one of the sweeter characters, and I guess it feels not only so wildly OOC that it's not even him, but like insult to injury to say 'oh, X but he's a CREEP/MURDERER/CRIMINAL he's a NASTY MAN'.
