Late to this post, but most of us celebrate these ships for their redemptive qualities, not because they're "messed up". That's a new take that I can only assume has come up over time. Having been in one of those fandoms for a number of years a lot of it is about angst more than trying to make the most messed up fic on the planet, lol.
