I get disheartened too, OP.
Some of my fics in the popular fandoms get kudos in the hundreds, even occassionally above a thousand and it warms my heart. But then I read ones with kudos in the tens of thousands and I... don't get it? It's disheartening because I don't personally feel the fics are particularly better written than mine.
I recall at one point here someone asked for advice on how to find the best fics in a fandom and there was a lot of advice to "list by kudos". I thought "Er... no?" There are a lot of fics that aren't the most popular kudos-wise that are fantastic. I've favourited a fair few and have wondered why they aren't more popular.
My theory is the ultra popular ones (particularly that are terribly written) just hit the fandom kinks in all the right places (nothing wrong with that :)).
