There really just aren't that many ugly female characters. Usually the closest I can get is shipping the muscular, butch female characters with the sexy men. Like, right now I'm shipping Holga from Honor Among Thieves with every single other character, basically. She's not ugly, but she's also not coded as hot (and I'm not particularly attracted to her), so it is fun to ship her with men (and women) coded as hot.

Similarly, I ship Haleth and Caranthir in the Silmarillion. He's a son of Feanor, they're all hot, and she's an action human. She's not ugly per say, but we're not told anything about her looks. She's just a warrior and a chieftain in a world where women usually aren't those things.

While I don't read CM fics, Garcia/Luke is the first Criminal Minds ship with two main characters I've shipped. Before them I only shipped JJ/Will.

Back in the day I used to ship book!Hermione with all the hot men/boys. I was way into her with Victor, Cedric, Sirius, Lucius, and anyone else I was remotely attracted to.

I've been told Eric Flint has some examples of the dynamic, but I haven't read any of his books yet.

Jaime/Brienne can work for this dynamic. I'd ship if I didn't dislike him so much and think she deserves so much better.
