If a story does a really good job of building the characters and developing their relationship, so that you really understand and feel the way they see and value each other, then it can definitely work for me.

I don't like it most of the time, but that's because most of the time it's basically just treated as the logical conclusion that the ugly guy will get the hot girl in the end, because he...*reads notes*...has a personality. Because he's not abusive like her ex, or because he grew slightly as a person, or because he was brave that one time, or because he recognizes that she is both hot and a person, or whatever.

With all this said, you do you, obviously. As far as romance tropes go, this one is honestly pretty tame, and obviously popular since it's so common--just maybe a bit less popular in many fandom spaces and in mainstream ones.
