Child labor laws?

(Anonymous) 2023-07-23 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Are the UK's child labor laws really that much stricter than New Zealand's?

(Anonymous) 2023-07-24 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
Child labor laws put limits on quantity of acting, not quality.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-23 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
It could be the more strict child labor laws affecting that? But Idk, maybe casting directors don't care as much with kid actors in the UK.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-23 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Idk what shows you are judging this by but I think child acting has gotten awful in the last decade+. It honestly kind of amazes me that there could be worse.

outside of stranger things what US show has good child actors? most of them suck because they're kids and don't know how to act yet.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-24 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
And Eleven in Stranger Things is British!

(Anonymous) 2023-07-24 12:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Omg is she? That's hilarious, because when I watched 'Enola Holmes,' I thought, "eh, I guess she's doing okay with the British accent. Could be better."

I can't believe I thought her own natural accent could use improvement! What a dummy I am.

I was thinking the same thing, there are tons of crummy kid actors in American TV shows and movies. I suspect they pick them for looks and not talent.

My brother works in film, and he explained to me once rhay young children *are* cast based on having the right look for a part. A lot of time young kids are basically just playing themselves, which is why so many of them don't really age well as actors. Strictly speaking, they aren't actors. The ones who turn out to be able to really act are unusual.

All the kids in Netflix’s Baby-Sitter’s Club were really good. Also the young Crains in The Haunting of Hill House.

I'll stan for the kids in Young Sheldon, particular Sheldon and Missy. They've been great from the start.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-24 08:51 am (UTC)(link)
They may suck, but it's not because they're kids. I remember a time when many adult actors in the US didn't want to be onscreen with children or animals, because even really good actors tended to look fake and uninteresting in comparison. The kids would consistently "steal the show."

Same reason that the West End musical talent is so shit compared to Broadway: nowhere near as much choice. I mean we're talking about an island, even if it is a giant one.

Honestly comparing the singing in Six between the OG Cast and the OBC Cast it's embarrassing for the West End.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-24 06:46 am (UTC)(link)
Australia and New Zealand are also islands.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-25 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Strong, strong disagree. The West End has some utterly amazing talent, Broadway seems to cast the same actors in everything. There also isn't a West End cast recording for Six, just a studio recording which cannot be compared to a cast recording (the show didn't exist in its current format). They've filmed the West End performance of Six but lack of distribution is preventing it from being released.

It actually makes me think we should have conversations about whether or not we should be giving prominent roles to child actors to begin with anyway. Get into the ethics of hiring child actors, and creating entertainment for children while also trying to do as little harm to the children hired for these things.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-24 11:24 am (UTC)(link)
I don't get it either - I thought that the child actors were dreadful in Good Omens, for example, and I'm afraid I don't think any of the main kids in Harry Potter could (and still can't!) act for toffee. Not that the kid playing Anakin in the Phantom Menace was any better. Whereas the younger actors in Game of Thrones did really well, I felt, and the kiddo who played Lyra in the Golden Compass movie too, as a couple of counter-examples.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-25 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
You need a director who can work with kids. Most don't get that kids are not little adults, they're kids.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-24 11:42 am (UTC)(link)
Probably classism. It usually is when it comes to the UK sucking. Does England still recruit its child actors from the same half dozen middle class agents who all went to the same school, and who put forward the kids of their friends who also went to that school? Because that is how it used to be. I think it is probably still mostly the same. Perhaps a little bit looser, but you can't breed a population for a thousand years to Know Your Place without some sort of lingering social effects.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-24 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
What a load of utter bollocks.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-25 10:35 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you for that searing insight, did you go to Eton?

(Anonymous) 2023-07-25 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
The rules are so strict in the UK and the casting is usually done locally because again, there are more rules about kids being away from home. If you ever see an open call for Matilda you'll see that they must live within a certain distance. It's also a huge amount of work for a kid who has to keep up their schooling as well...and there are very, very few directors who have figured out to work with kids. I remember a very famous director reducing a child to tears because the child was tired and not performing how the director wanted.

Anyone who wants to see amazing kid performances...Matilda the Musical and Outnumbered.
